Blown Engine Rebuild

I'm pretty sure, after hearing reccounts from Ken and your posts, that it was a combo of your tune and modifications that made you blow. A combination of a catless exhaust, stock K04, and 19 PSI tune is never a good thing. That's pretty much asking for a blown motor. You are asking the teeny K04 to do so much and in turn, getting those crazy boost spikes, which blew your motor.

The good thing is, now, you don't have to worry about any of that, just fuel I guess.

I don't agree at all. You underestimate the K04. . . It can take more than 15 psi. 17-18 psi is considered a conservative tune. Keeping the A/F ratios in order and KR down + not mashing the gas at low rpm = the best bet to avoid boom imo. Plenty of people are running high boost. I have been holding over 17psi for 15K miles. Spiking 22+ is not good though.

After installing an intake + TMIC + midpipe . . . most people would be holding well into the 17-18's.

Love the car Jchoin. Looks awesome and I hope it lives up to your expectations!

Thanks! When I drive my car now with the wg solenoid on, I get that feeling like Cole Trickle when he first got back on the track after his epic crash! My go-foot gets twitchy and I start sweating! haha I have a boost complex now!

Nice build.. sounds like a ton of fun.

Yeah... boost spikes and detonation. Gotta love em. Nothing sends you bank account balance downhill faster.

Better luck this time.

Dude, Video, Audio clip, SOMETHING!!!! Im way antsy to build a new motor for my speed, and I like the direction you took in a big ol' horny way!!!

Jokes aside (Not really, still truth), Great Build.
This is inspiration for me to start my second build. The speed 3's up to 94k on the clock, stock and runs great and strong. I think I would rather find me a good or new block and internals and start from there. Maybe I can be the first build thread that didnt start with a BOOM thread!!!

Seriously though, pics and vids, Pics and VIDS!!! :D

Haha a vid will be on the way! It won't be a wot vid because I don't feel comfortable doing this without a tune. The Cobb tune I am running now just isn't intended for big turbo and lower compression. As far as your build, you should be fine with your block as a starting point. Save the money on the block and get it bored .20 over if you have lots of wear in your cyls, but something tells me you won's see any and will be able to build the bottom end as is. Things I have learned...unless you plan on using a standback with 600ish in additional flashes, you will hit load cut with a 2871r, so there is no need to go bigger, because you won't make more power, and lose spool time. There are those on the forum that will tell you to go 3071r or 3076r, but I personally know a 3076r guy that really wants a 2871r. Feel free to pm me when you get things going, for what it's worth, I can help steer you in the right direction!

The stickers are covering up battle wounds on the i/c pipe. I'm not normally a sticker guy, but I'm also not a scratched up pipe guy either! May refinish the pipes eventually and try to get some uniform coupler action going

They are 8.8 pistons. Question, how do I import a datalog into this thread? It gives me an invalid file error.

You have to save it as a worksheet. On my computer the worksheet is the 1st among the options. The normal xcel format doesn't work.

here is a 4th gear pull I did this morning. I am still working on the tune by means of pseudo street tuning. So far, I am really impressed with the 2871 as the car is verrrry quick. I will try to get a few dyno pulls this weekend. I need to decide if I want it done on a dynojet or dynapack. The dynojet is much closer in Schaumburg, so I may just go there. However, the dynapack at GRD is cheaper and may be more accurate.
