I just got a '16 CX-5 Touring in titanium Flash and I'm shopping for new Titanium colored 19" wheels and when they're on, then the roof rails have to be black.

Should I paint or wrap< advice?

Do you go to automatic car washes? Will you use the roof rack? How does the wrap stand up to the brushes in the car war? Powder coat might be more durable.

Do it your self. Spraymax 2k black and 2k clear. Both of those paints are two part isocyanatic paints, the same thing used when professionally spraying with a gun, buts it's in a can. You have to "activate" the cans and shake to mix. I've used these paints on my motorcycle and they have held up very well for three years, even on the gas tank around the full hole which is prone to problems. A little more expensive but cheaper then powder coat and 100x better then regular spray paint.

Plasti-dip is also a good option if, like me, you have no intention of using the roof racks. They came with the car but putting anything up there kills MPG so I never use them. If you aren't familiar with the product, it is a rubberized spray that can be peeled off at any time and does not damage the paint underneath.

I had it on my wheels for over a year and it was still in great shape when I went to remove it (because I was trading in my vehicle). The wheels went through a Midwest winter complete with tons of salt dumped on the roads and withstood that abuse. I expect the roof rails to hold up even better since those get touched far less than my wheels.

I just painted my rails black on Tuesday!

Seems like a lot of work to paint the side rails. Why not just pop the caps and remove the four bolts per side?

(omg) that would have been nice to know! On my VW, to remove the rails required dropping the headliner inside to access the bolts. It really didn't take long to drape the plastic sheets and throw on some painters tape. Ha oh well!

did you use the basic black plasti-dip?
wondering how well it matches the other black trim
a closer pic outdoors if you get the chance would be great

surprised mazda only offers silver for the cx-5, the contrast of black with some of the 2016 colour options is nicer IMO than the silver

and yeah - site search here has several large-ish topics on roof rails, including the install pdf
pretty sure we got a copy in our pile of paperwork, but would have to check later

I usually do more research, however, I just bought this thing a week ago Saturday and was more eager to get the rails black than to peruse the interwebs.

I did use the basic black plasti-dip, and I think it matches the other black trim quite well. See for yourself, though:

The plasti-dip looks to match the black trim very well indeed. Did you 'dip' the wheels as well?

Yep rims are now dipped as well using the anthracite grey "true metallic" line sold by dipyourcar.com. They have a nice metallic sheen to them but I'll also be adding the gloss coat soon to look more oem like the 2016 models. I took the wheels off to paint them. Great tutorials on YouTube so you don't waste time and energy by using the wrong techniques.

Looks good. I have a white CX5 as well (and live in KC). I plan on popping off the racks this weekend and spraying with black plastidip. How many cans did you go through? I have 2 on hand right now. I'm thinking (hoping?) that should be enough since doing the front emblem and two back badges (removed the skyactiv one) only took half a can. And that was with 4 coats and redoing the back and front a couple of times.

Thanks! 2 cans should be plenty for the racks. I used probably 1.5 cans and put it on pretty heavy. The first 2 coats I do pretty light, followed by a little heavier 3rd, and even heavier 4th and 5th. I offer that just for reference on application methods. If you prefer to do even more/heavier coats you may use both cans up. In that case, it wouldn't hurt to have a 3rd can lying around because they sometimes "sputter" on me when almost empty and that can leave irregular spots.

If you know you are going to want to keep the rails black I would highly recommend looking into the spraymax paint. Its really some awesome stuff.

Very valid point. I will definitely consider that if/when my rails need a refresh. This assumes, of course, that you are confident in your ability to lay down nice, even layers of paint. Plasti-dip is more forgiving when errors are made so it's great for novice painters (myself included).

I thought about that, too. I'd rather do it permanently since I won't want to go back to the chrome look. I definitely want the black forever. Is the SprayMax paint only available online? I don't see any stores available that carry it. Then again, I am not familiar with it, so maybe you have a bit more info on it's availability.
