Biking (GENERAL THREAD)

I just started biking 2 years ago. Bought a little khs dj200 hardtail. Good for the dirt jumps around my area, but not so much for the trail riding. Looking at buying a Santa Cruz heckler for my trail bike.

I have since taken all the reflectors off and stripped numerous things, that was right when I bought it. Besides, spending anymore than $500 on a hardtail is stupid anyways, after that you might as well go full suspension. My Specialized has everything I want in a hardtail.

BTW, since when does the price of the bike dictate what I can do with it?

Well, judging by your bike, it looks more like light duty trails and paths bike. When I think of "mountain biking", I think of rough terrain and mountains. That's all. And I agree that $500 is a good price for a hardtail. I said I used to buzz by cats who had bikes 3x as expensive as mine. It's not the price of the bike that makes a good rider. But I personally doubt that bike will last very long, maybe a few months, on mountain biking trails.

And I guess I'm just jaded when people call themselves "mountain bikers" and they ride on a paved path on a "mountain bike" in the park. I've gone out with friends so many times who say they are "mountain bikers" and they fall off the bike on the first 15 yards of the trail. THAT is annoying. It's like "Why are you gonna waste my day now waiting for you and babysitting?" Arg! (gah)

I just know too many "bikers" who have roof racks on thier modified cars and cart their bike around because it "looks cool". I'm sure this 300lbs fellow can ride a bike.

And my rant is over. My apologies for offending anyone. Good day.

good rant! i really gotta get myself on a new freeride bike. the stinky is an 03 and has many old components on it. not fun hucking a 45+lbs bike anymore

Ruet, I love your Kona. But I hear ya on the weight issue. I was going to buy a "free ride" bike, but I actually like riding up the hills too and those bikes tend to get pretty heavy. Post up pics of all your bikes again, so I can drooooool.

well the stinky has been repainted and i made new decals since then. threw on a shorter travel and MUCH lighter fork. that shiver comes in at around 8.5lbs. i cant get rid of it though because its just such an awesome fork since it comes almost straight from a motocross bike.

im hoping to get myself on either a Morewood Mbuzi or Transition Bottlerocket. same travel as my old stinky but much lighter.

also, fun how people want to boot the biking talk out of the P5 thread but there is plenty of other non-P5 stuff that is posted in there and no one says anything, even when the topic goes on for a bit. HATERS! hehe

I'll have to research all those brands. I used to bike much more a few years back, but my job kicks my ass during the day and I'm too tired afterwards. But I would love to get back into it. Nothing beats flying down some swtichback singletrack on a sunny summer day.

And I hear ya on the P5 thread, Haha! Like I was hinting at, I think the bike racks for most cats are just trendy. They pay more money for the racks than the bike itself. Dare I say.... posers? Oooooh. Ouch.

Damn, now I wanna go ride. My good old trusty steed GT Aggresor may need to get dusted off tomorrow. Cheap bike I know, but she can take a beating!

I love how my bike is being made fun of. First off, this is my first mountain (cross country) bike. Why would I spend $500 on a first bike? This bike will be good enough to get me into the groove of riding and learning how to ride, then after that I can upgrade if I want. It's a perfect starter bike to get me into the sport.

Also, I never said my bike was the best out there. I know I have a low line Specialized.

I wasn't making fun of it for real. my first real bike I bought was a 2000 Gary Fisher Tassajara that I paid $680 for. still have it because it's such a great bike. set up more for cruising around on now.

a bike like yours matt would be real fun to have again. I havnt been just trail riding in a long while. enjoy the ride!

There's nothing wrong with your bike Matt. Just like your car, you'll be upgrading s*** on it as you go.

Here's some old-school s*** from somewhere around 1993-96:

Matt, I wasn't refering to you directly. I know a lot of cats locally that have bike racks on all the time and rarely ever go ride. Bike racks around here are trendy and just silly. And my first bike was inexpensive too. Then I upgraded to the GT which is still an inexpensive bike ($500 brand new). I bought it 10 years ago and rode it aggressively for 4-5 years every other day on rugged trails. I still ride it and it still runs great. Like I said, I've been able to ride better, longer and faster than guys with bikes that cost 3x as much as my GT did. Price isn't the point here.

Regardless, we all love mountain biking AND Mazdas, so it's all good. Riding single track on a warm day is one of the best feelings in the world.

i love the bottle rocket! one of my fav bikes. my riding buddy has a transition preston fr. transition makes some nice ass bikes.

I hear ya Lewis. I'm trying to go riding at least 2-3 times a week when I can. And you're right, technically there are no "mountains" here so I'm not technically a "mountain" biker, it's more technical trails with slight elevation changes, but it's still challenging enough as I'm just learning the proper techniques and at the same time building up my endurance. I picked up biking as a fun hobby that was physical, I'm really enjoying it so far.

It's all good, Matt. Sorry I came off so mean. I must've been in a bad mood.

A Specialized is a good first bike and will do well for a while until you start getting better on the trails and feel the need to upgrade. Hell, my first mountain bike was a cheap Mt. Shasta and was a chromoly frame and heavy as hell! I rode that beast for a few seasons until I could afford the GT, and even that was a cheap bike for the time. But I've ridden it so long that I've gotten so used to it's geometry. I bought a Gary Fisher Pirahana last year and sold it soon after because it just felt too small.

But I really need to get into riding. So thanks to you members who ride and getting me fired up to ride once again. I'll get back into the habit of watching my mountain bike videos and getting amped up to go ride and NOT sit at the computer.

yeah matt, i dont know if you got my pm but im apologizing too for my responses to your bike. just some friendly joking around like you were doing to lots of people putting HID bulbs in the stock housings after you started fitting projectors :)

planning a trip soon to do some single speed cruising through the streets of NYC. going to weave in and out of traffic and try to not get hit!

what videos are you watching for mountain biking?

I have a Gary Fisher Pirhana...it took me almost 6 months to find a bike I felt comfortable on...I was 360lbs when I first got it, and most bikes felt like crap for my big self up on them...I have had a blast with this bike...only thing I have done is upgraded to a much stiffer front fork...feels a lot more stable to me...

Not to dig up an old thread... But I'm gonna :D
I've recently gotten into mountain and road biking. So far I am absolutely addicted to mountain biking. So much so that some of my friends have joked that they need to have an intervention lol. It's actually one of the biggest reasons I bought my P5. Seemed like a cool little fuel efficient vehicle to mount my bikes to.

Since I'm new to the sport I would like to hear from youmore experienced guys. Tips, tricks and must have's as far as gear goes. Pics always welcomed!!

My mountain bike is a 2001 cannondale jekyll 500 feminine. Road bike is a 2010 cannondale caad8 feminine 6. I'll post pics when I get home.

some day i gotta get myself a cannondale with a lefty purely for the novelty of the fork.

ive kinda fizzled out of mountain biking in the past two years for trials riding and starting this summer, road riding.

p5 is great for getting bikes around but now im running a hitch rack set up so having the hatch is kinda unnecessary. but the hatch just looks so much cooler than a sedan

I had a hitch on my Blazer. The way my frame is, it was difficult to get off and on. My riding partner has a lefty.

Here's my pics
