Bigger Oil Filter?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't letting all the oil drain out a BAD thing? Wouldn't you want a little bit of the old oil still in the system to lubricate everything for the first start up after the change?

Why is it a bad thing? Letting ALL the old oil drain out during a change is no different from letting your car sit overnight during which time almost all the oil that remains on the engine parts will drain down to the sump anyway. The engine will be just as "dry" in either case. If you're seriously concerned about this, switch to a Polyol ester based synthetic oil such as Red Line. Polyol ester molecules have an inherent polarity that causes them to be attracted to positively charged metal surfaces. Without going into further detail, the electrostatic forces that cause the molecules to stick to metal surfaces insure that a protective layer is there at all times, even during the crucial start-up period.

After a filter change, probably the most wear that occurs is due to starting with a dry filter, although this wear is probably miniscule since in most cases an engine is never totally "dry"-some residual oil film is present. However, if you're worried about this, simply prime the new filter by pouring some oil into it before installation.

IMO, these factors just discussed have very little effect on engine longevity in the total scheme of things.

I just got my oil changed and they put a $2 dollar filter on it, I am wondering if the $10 dollar K&N filter is that much better.

The K&N filter is probably better than the $2 filter, but you can't go wrong with the Mazda filter, either OEM or 626 V6.

I use Mobil1 and K&N filters, and my interval is still the really low 5000Km.

I use the 626 mobil1 filter (M1-108) and mobil1 10w30. I still change at every 3000 miles.

More filter = good... period.

Now lets leave it at that!

KN-1004 ? Does it fit ?

On the K&N site, the OEM replacement is the HP-1008.
This is the K&N filter you will need to replace the stock one.

Ya man, I'm using the HP-1004 right now and have been for about a year. It fits just fine and since it's bigger, provides more filter media so your oil stays cleaner. Get the 1004.

yea i saw that at autozone but i already bought the hp1008. so i'm happy with that, it's a k&n. i'm all good. (first)

O.k. I haven't changed my oil for 4 months... I know... I know, my car is going to lose about 50k miles of it's life... things are going to start breaking soon, my tires are gunna blow out, my shift knob is gunna pop off.... (rlaugh)

The OEM filters are fine and are good for the price, but they are not the best overall.

Here is a small snip from an independent oil filter study:

"The Mobil 1 filter uses a unique end plate and a thicker can that make it the strongest filter available for wide distribution retail sale. This filter is NOT a fake... It is definitely a unique design. It uses a synthetic fiber element that can filter out very small particles and is very strong. It is rated just under the Purolator Pure One as far as filtering capability, but flows much better."

Did not know there was Mobil 1 oil filters !

Here is the part # .

They have it at Autozone for $10.99

Same thing here: the M1-108 replaces the OEM size unit. Can we use a larger Mobil 1 filter that will fit ?

Are they available in Canada ?

The local autogroan here also has the "long life" mobil1 filter - supposedly good for 15k miles. To complement their long life oil... interesting. Same size as regular though, so I'm guessing if they've stuffed more filtration media in there, the flow rate will be reduced.

Two caveats:

Some oil filters have by-pass valves in them, basically so that if something happens and oil can not flow thru the filter medium, it by passes the medium and returns to the engine, un-filtered. Sure, filtered oil is best, but no oil is the worst. This will be revisited, below.

As for changing back to the old, manuf.-recommended filter after the engine blows, are you really going to have the presence of mind, or even the opportunity, to do that? Typically, you are miles and miles away from home when this happens, maybe it is late at night and you are totally bummed by the events of the evening- you call a wrecker to have it towed. While waiting, you remember your filter gambit. The wrecker driver gets there, and he tells you it will cost you an additional charge ($50? 100? more) to tow it to your home, 30 miles away, than to tow it to the nearest dealership, 5 miles away. If you have it towed home, you have to take some time to switch filters on your baby, when all you really want to do is cry. Then, another $50 to 100 to tow it BACK past where you broke down, to the dealership. So, now you are out maybe $200, and you don't REALLY know if the dealership is going to warranty the blown motor, or not. What other mods have you done, that would affect engine longivity? Intake/aftermarket/suspect air filter? Aftermarket Turbo, or God, forbid- NOS? THOSE will get your warranty claim thrown out faster than Chipper Jones throws fast balls.

Besides (to revisit the by-pass issue) who here doesn't change their filter at every oil change? Haven't noticed if Mazda does so, but often manufactures recommend filters be changed every OTHER oil change- they are implying, pretty strongly, that the filter has TWICE the filtering capacity it needs for 3000-4000 miles.

Seems like much ado about nothing, (to quote the Bard), to me.
