Bigger Oil Filter?

Mazda Protege 5
Hi all,

Previously, I had a 2wd Blazer and I was able to put the bigger 4wd oil filter on which is better since it offered more capacity and more filtration. Now, I got my P5 just a few weeks ago and am about to do it's first oil change. So I go to the parts store to get my filter to find out that the recomended filter is about the size of a baby mug. Obviously, the p5 is a 4 cylinder and doesn't reqiure anything bigger but .... can you put a bigger filter on from a different model, or even make? Also, which regulary available filters do you use cause I dont want to use FRAM and ACDelco doesnt make one for the P5. Are the dealers charging alot for the factory filters? I just want to use a quality one.

yes you can use the mazda 626 V6 filter (not mazda6, the old 626), it is about an inch taller than the stock protege filter. the biggest filter i have seen installed on a mazda 4cyl is a Corvette ZR-1 filter

dealer sells the oem filter for around $6, which is about the same for a Purolator PureOne filter. of course Mobil 1 and K&N also makes filters for the Protege, haven fun picking your filter lol

There was a thread on this recently, search for details, bigger oilfilter = less oil in motor, etc

Just a warning to those using the 626 V6 filter..I bought one the other day and got warned by the dealership that they will void your warranty if something goes wrong with the engine and you are using a filter other than the one recommended for the 2.0l. (Stupid, I know, but if you want to keep your warranty stick with the stock size)

they're dumb
my local dealer uses the V6 oil filters for their oil changes on any car it fits in!

Canadian Mazda 626 turbo oil filter part number MAZDA-F2Y0-14-302A-CA maybe if the CA at the end is removed its good in the states too.

I dont really see any reason to have more oil in the engine as long as you change it every 3-5K miles. Seems like an off-size filters is just needlessly inviting trouble.

if you use a bigger filter obviously put more oil in. it's only dangerous if you use a huge filter and the scholars at jiffy lube put in 3.5 quarts

The RX-8 uses the same filter (B6Y1-14-302) as the Protege.

I can't see any reason to use a bigger filter than what is recommended by the dealer/manufacturer.

I got the 626 filter for hte 1st time, and no problems. The dealer will try to void any warranty for any reason. That is why they are called stealerships!

Get the 626 filter, keep the old one. Blow the motor, put the old one back on. Problem solved.

Thanks for the advice guys. Its more of a personal preference I guess. They are the same price anyways so I figure why not get the one that is able to filter and hold more...even if it is just a few more ounces. If something breaks i'll be sure to put a factory one back on..haha.

.....whatever floats your boat? don't think it will make any difference, but it is your personal preference.

Can someone answer my question? What is the point? It doesn't give you ant more power, it holds a tiny bit more, so I guess it might be cooler, but not by enough to make any kind of difference, and it seems to be just asking for trouble. Like raider said, "Blow you motor, put the stock one back on." But why not just keep the stock one on and have less risk of blowing your motor for no gains? I just dont understand.

It doesn't give more power, it only holds a couple of ounces more oil and it won't reduce oil temperature. What it does do is provide ~ 20% more filter media than OEM and thus will filter for a longer period without clogging. This MIGHT have some advantage for those who use synthetic oil and extended oil change periods. It certainly will not cause any engine problems because it has the same pressure relief setting as OEM and also incorporates an anti-drain back valve. The OEM filter is certainly adequate and using the 626 V6 filter may be overkill but it definitely is not harmful in any way. The only time using an oversize filter could be harmful is if it has a pressure relief setting different than stock.

*My* answer ..like I stated above, is that even though its not much..it filters and holds just that much more (im more interested in the filter part). I know its not much but every little bit helps. As far as the blown motor goes.... i dont see how that would happen with a filter just a few ounces bigger. With either filter, it still has to fill up first because it appears that the mounting angle makes it drain when the engine is off.

The filters don't drain when the engine is off, they have anti-drainback valves. From that standpoint it doesn't matter how large they are.

Then..Even Better!

I also feel that the more filter, the better, bottom line. I am sure that if for some reason the motor blew up, they would never check the oil filter size. And even if they did, it is not a huge difference in size. I just decided to use it because more filter equals more crap filtered, and it also makes it so you put 4 quarts in, all is well, no odd percentages.

I also like the extra filtration surface and the feeling of more free flow of oil cuz it will clog less. But I've been using the 1990 929 filter which is probably the same as the 626 but im not 100% sure. the 929 filter fits 1st gen protege and the pro5 i have now. no problems at all with either car (my first one i sold with 250000 miles on it! and on both of the cars and i use synthetic (5w30) and i use it for between 5000 -7500 miles and thats why i use the bigger filter. in the first half a year of owning the pro5 i was taking my car to the dealer to change oil. they wanted me to come for oil change every 3000 miles till i went off on them. i even made the guy give me another reminder sticker for the window that had exactly 5000 more miles on it than current milage. 5000 is the minimum recomended interval from the owners manual i told them. also i drop in exactly 4 quarts of oil everytime i do the oil change myself but i let it drip for like 2 hours or a bit more so more of the old oil comes out. i even take the oil filler cap off and blow in there to get the most oil out. so comparing this to how the dealer does oil changes i think its the same amount of oil at the end. they do it quick and less oil drips out and use less than 4 quarts and i let it drip alot and i use a bigger oil filter and 4 full quarts. anyway i went too much off topic. peace (lol2)
