Big problem. Need new turbo...?

One day I was driving and all of the sudden I experienced a violent bogging/shaking when trying to speed up. More specifically when applying enough pressure on the gas pedal to where the turbo would normally begin to spool. I took it to the Mazda dealer and they said it was pushing only 4 lbs of boost and that it was dumping fuel due to the low boost. They recommended a new turbo and quoted me $3,500 total.

I took my car back and am driving it VERY carefully until I find a solution. I can't pay 3,500. Ordering a turbo myself would probably be cheaper, so I was looking at turbos online and noticed the GT28RS DISCO POTATO looked promising since its a "direct fit", but wouldn't I have to modify other parts of the car (non-housing related) if I'm adding something that creates more power? My car is stock. If I have to do that, it'd probably be just as expensive anyways right?

i thought you had to turn the boost down a little bit more with the t28? maybe wrong so correct me if i am!

you dont need and adapter for the t28 and t25, they're interchangable. the only thing that needs to be done is adjust eh wastegate actuator bracket. now, if your completely stock, i dont recommend the upgrade. at minimum i would say upgraded sidemount and mid pipe exhaust upgrade. thing spools stupid fast and moves a significant more cfm of air. i would say try and find a stocker used or new and it will be cheaper than mazdas quote. ( i just sold a stocker in decent shape for 200$ not too long ago and they can be had for that price)

on the actual issue, check your wastegate. it has a habit of backing out and getting stuck open (not the actuator the actual flapper) to check this you have to either pull off the turbo, or if you can get to it, pull off the actuator arm and move it.

a hammer can solve this if its the issues (and time) but it will eventually happen again.
