Big Brakes!

'03.5 MSP(Yellow!)
Ok, I'm running out of brakes on track, and have started looking into big brake options for the protege. So far, what I've come up with are a few interesting options:
RR racing has several options for us, including two kit: one that moves the caliper outwards, and utilized bigger (12"x1") rotors (still fits in stock 16" rims), and one that's a "4-pot racing caliper kit" that i don't think fits in stock rims, and has 13" rotors.

For reference, the stock MSP rotors are 10.75"x .984".

my concern about the 12" kit is, if you move the calipers outwards, the pads will not be contacting as much of the rotor surface as before. This might negate the point of getting larger rotors.

Another option is the corksport kit. it uses 12.75" rotors, new wilwood calipers, and will only fit in 17" wheels. It's 1200 bucks.

E-racer has a kit available, it uses 11.7" rotors, but they're only .81" wide. not even as wide as the stock MSP rotors. Probably not a good idea, at least for us MSP guys. It does use wilwood 4-pot calipers though. They offer a full kit or a "DIY" kit. the full kit is 750, whereas the DIY kit is 130. Not a bad option, really. Not as big as I'd like personally.

Thoughts on the matter? other factors that should be taken into account?

When you say you are running out of brakes do you mean you get brake fade really quickly? Are you not stopping as well as you want, think you should? Are you boiling your fluid? What kind of tires are you running? What kind of pads do you have?

I mean I'm experiencing brake fade. Whether it's pad fade or boiling fluid I do not know. I am running carbotech bobcats on all 4 corners on the street (which is where the most recent fade has occurred, on an AWESOME section of downhill). I run bobcats on the rear and panther plus on the track, but haven't been back since I've got the new power. However, on challenging sections of road, I have experienced fade where I did not before, even at a measly 11psi (run 16psi on track).

You may have glazed the rotors. And you may be boiling your fluid as well. I would try getting your rotors turned, and/or sand them and re-bed the pads. Also, change and fully flush your fluid and maybe go with ATE Blue brake fluid.

If you are just overheating them you could consider making some brake cooling ducts. If you really want to buy a BBK then that will help some, but remember, your brakes can only slow down the car as fast as the tires will let them.

BTW, there should be no reason you would experience fade on the street, unless I suppose you are talking mountain runs, even then....

Rotora makes the best BBK for our cars (IMO). No need to rebuild the caliper often like ALL the other compagnies (all of it, Willwood, AP Racing, etc.) who use no dust protection whatsoever.

Rotora's are the best!!!

rotora's huh? where might I find some more info?
The car's fluid is going to be flushed with fresh DOT3 fluid tomorrow, and hopefully a full brake job (new rotors and pads). We'll see how well that works.

Sportcompactonly.com has the rotora kit, pretty pricey though. I remember its a 2 piece rotor, 4 pot caliper, and you have to run 17+ inch wheels. They have the red and blue calipers, but the price hurts, almost 2K. You can probably beat that price elsewhere though.

Rotora MSRP is 1799.99, stoptech is comparable, Willwood makes a 13" 4 POT kit for the same money, and VTTR has a kit out, and a 6 Piston option iirc.

I know what you mean about the brakes... i cant get slowed down quick enough from high speeds to be safe, and they are toast after a quick stop. Time for wilwood 6 piston!

you may also wanna get the 929 master cylinder. there is a how-to somewhere. do a search. It will be something I do when I get a BB kit. I also heard Bear might make one for the protege. Maybe we can make a thread about interest and e-mail them the thread to speed up their thought process

dot3? no wonder you're boiling fluid.

get rbf600 (race dot4)

the 929 mc ist 100% required, it's just a nice to have. my brakes are great with the stock mc

I remember seeing that VTTR kit. It's like 1750, but lord is it nice, two piece rotor (don't remember sizes), and I think it was a 6 piston. That one fit in 17"+, and they had a one piece option that was 4 piston for like 1200 (it'd fit the stock wheels).

Get in touch with Ken he has a kit that will be coming out soon. I have this kit on my p5 and works very well.

I have the rights to produce and sell the Delsing Motorsports kit (6 piston Wilwoods, 13" rotor). I haven't contacted the supplier yet, but it should run around $1200-1300.

I use Castrol SRF fluid. It is expensive, (@$70 /pint) but has worked great in all me cars. I will even but it in my Dakota which has Hawk HPS pads (4 wheel disc) on it for towing. That with SS brakelines make a big difference. You can also put in a fluid recirculator which pulls all the old hot fluid out of the calipers and keeps fresh cool fluid going in. I agree that you probably glazed, but I bet it's the pads. Try a Brillo pad against the face of the pads, than file a small 45 degree angle around the full edge of the pad, but only about a 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch. It will help dissapate heat while not reducing surface area but an appreciable amount.

Does the 929 MC have the integrated clutch pressure release valve BS? I understand that that is inside the MC of the MSP, I need to get rid of it. Also is the 929 rear disc?

I thought Motul600 was expensive at $15/pt....

I've been looking into making a BBK myself w/ Wilwood 4pistons, but I'm having trouble finding centers. When I replace my oem rotors this weekend, I'll have a better idea on the measurements I guess.

I'm upgrading my MC to the 929 Unit for the Wilwood 6 Pistons.... Why not... it cant hurt, and i'm sure the brakes would make use of it.
