Best suspension upgrade for auto-xing

I THINK the intercooler's fine, the wastegate...not so much

hmmmm. I dunno, thats what they told me. I guess if i end up in SM because of the wga, i'm screwed for being competitive, lol, but i still wanna get better and have fun with it.

EDIT: ya know, i think maybe i just forgot to mention it when i was trying to figure out my proper class with them. But it does seem dumb that i can run in DSP with a wga that has a bad diagphram, giving me MORE boost, but have to be upped a class when i replace it to get my boost in check.

Because you CAN'T run DSP with a bad diaphram. upping the boost mechanically, whether it's on purpose or because of a defective part, is illegal.

A 6psi replacement from Garrett is legal. Just because you didn't buy the part from Mazda, doesn't mean its illegal. The OEM actuator has a rodend that you can use to increase the actuator preload, where the Garret one does not. So a non-Mazda purchased WGA poses less of a potential cheaping problem.

The best handling mod for auto-xing imho is seat time. The MSP already has decent handling out of the box, and it'll take some time to learn the limit of the car as it. Don't get the best tire out of the box too. You want to learn what it is like driving on the edge. Progress towards grippier tires as time and skill progress.

Being competitive in racing is proportional to amount of dollar you spent. So it's how competitive you want it to be. So keep that in mind

Improve your skillz.... I've seen a person drive a Integra GSR (separate rims and tires) otherwise pretty much stock that looked like a boat going through the slalom course and ending up owning the class at the end of the day... same result every damn time he showed up to race (his performance is impressive and you won't believe it until you actually see his car go around a cone and look like it's about to roll over). Tires do seem to make the most difference... it did for me too (narrow to wider).

boost is now unlimited in SP.

that said, there's a whole ambiguity about wastegate actuators, compressor bypass valves, etc that i'm not clear on, but boost itself is free in SP, until you blow up your stock turbo.

look at 15.10 in the rules.

4. Turbochargers and/or superchargers (forced induction)

may not be added, changed, or modified. On vehicles originally
equipped with forced induction:
a) No hardware changes or alterations to turbocharger(s) or
supercharger(s), in size or number, are permitted. Turbochargers
or superchargers may be updated/backdated
only in conjunction with the accompanying complete
engine unit.
b) No changes are allowed to waste gate(s) size, number, or
location. No changes are allowed to variable-geometryturbine
(VGT) hardware.
c) No changes are allowed to supercharger drive system
pulleys. Belt tensioners may be added/changed to reduce
belt slip.
d) No changes are permitted to blow-off/pop-off valves.
e) Compressor bypass valves (CBVs) may be updated/backdated
independently of the other components of a forced
induction system.
f) Boost regulation systems, either electronic or mechanical,
and electronic fuel cuts referencing boost pressure may be
altered or modified except as prohibited herein. Boost
pressure changes resulting from authorized changes are
permitted

it sounds like the part we're talking about would be covered by b)? or is the waste gate actuator different from the waste gate itself?

either way, f) makes it sound like boost control is open a slong as it's not via a method specifically prohibited by 15.10. as i said before, there's a lot of ambiguity in the rule, e.g., what coomprises the "boost regulation system?" when is something a CBV vs. a blow-off valve? my point was that boost itself isn't an issue any longer; it's a question of what parts may or may not be changed. running higher-than-stock boost in SP is no longer illegal.

My only point is: The 6psi Garrett WGA that places like ATP Turbo sell, is the same part as the Mazda part. Just labelled differently.

It doesn't change location, size, or number of the wastegate(s), so i don't see why it would be illegal. Its simply getting a part put out by garret vs a part put out by mazda, so that i don't have to shell out the extra $$$. My boost went up .5psi from when i was totally stock, with a properly functioning (to my knowledge) wastegate. .5 psi is easily attainable just from intake, exhuast and intercooler. People have gotten more than that, so it may have even LOWERED my boost. I don't really see what the big deal is. Regardless, i'll make sure to explain the situation to the tech people at the next auto-x, and they can do whatever the hell they want. I just wanna drive and try to go a little faster, thats all.

It isn't really up to the tech people, or at least a big deal to them. It is up to someone in your class to protest it. So unless you are trying to be competitive at a National level, I wouldn't be too worried about it.
