Best Intake for the Money?

Im not sure about the warrenty but some dealers void it just because of the intake... but others don't mind... i had experience this on my vw... the mechanic said they have to void it good thing the other mechanic was an ethusiast so he backed me up. Installing is a breeze for this things its like playing lego hehe. Oh yeah I have the auto sport (so its automatic) but it sure sound like a manual on manual mode hehe

for starters....the dealer can NOT void your warrantee just because you put on an intake...or any other aftermarket part for that matter....its the law...can they give you a hard time? sure....but they can not actually void your warrantee...that is aginst the law.....the Magnuson-Moss Warrantee act to be exact.

NOW...if the part YOU installed fails and causes some other problem? THEN you are screwed...but just because you put on an intake...or exhaust....or whatever....does NOT mean your warrantee is going to be void. that is just plain BS

Here's the one I liked the best, Humvee. It has a real K&N Filter with it.

It doesn't have a reserve and there are plenty of them. It shows one quantity, but these guys have more. They do qty 1 auctions because they are trying to create their own little market for people to get into bidding wars over.

I found it by just doing a search on "Protege air intake".
does this one bring it down next to the wheel well for fresh air like a CAI? does it replace the whole thing or just from the MAF to the filter?

also, nuke, how do you fit the CAI in the wheel well hole with the radiator fluid container there?

you move/relocate it. and IF You happen to get an INJEN...the install instructions that come with it pretty much SUCK....they have you do a few things the HARD WAY.....if you get an INJEN...go to www.protege5online.com and go into the TECH section...and they have install instructions there for the Injen CAI that are way better than the ones that come with it.

here is a pic of it installed...you can see where the bottle gets moved to

one more intake question...

does anyone make an intake that just replaces the part from the MAF to the filter, moving the filter down to the wheel well like a cold air intake? im interested in getting a cai, but am not too concerned with how it looks under the hood, and if i could save some cash by only having to replace the tubing necessary to acheive this, i might be interested.
also, i was thinking about just popping on the k&n filter after the maf and removing the rest of that mess, but i would rather have the filter in a cooler place than right in the middle of the engine compartment. would there be any gains by just adding the k&n filter to the end of the MAF now with plans to replace it with a CAI when i got the cash?
thanks

I can take some pix of what I did...I just stuck a cone filter on the end. I wanted to see if it would really help. it makes a teenie difference. but I posted something somewhere that no more than 20 miles down the road, the check engine light came on. Sir Nuke said omething about resetting the ECU when you put the CAI, so I guess i will try this to make the light turn off and see if it comes on again. Not too concerned, since he runs great...

I followed the advice of this august group and did the K&N cone filter mounted on the MAF sensor. I shortened the rubber tubing to keep it close to the throttle body and just clamped the MAF to it. I then removed the huge, clunky stock air box.

I am SO VERY PLEASED with the way the engine responded! It pulls harder and sounds _mean_ above 3K - and yet is not *unpleasently* loud on the highway.

I have never/ever gotten this much of a performance difference for $25!! Suwheet.

:D

I'm going to try a different way for my intake. I'll make an air bath style to it I will try to custom the top part of my airbox to cover the filter

customkn1.jpg

with this it will suck air from the part that goes to the grille. Then I'll ad some tubing that will suck air where the CAI setup goes going to the buttom part of the stock airbox this will make it STOCK LOOK also :D so if you guys can donate or sell your stock airbox I'll take it

What model number is the K/N filter you guys used??? I want to pick one up but i dont know which one will fit.

Beware of the cheap autozone filters... I took off all the stock intake stuff and just a filter infront of the first tube... two years later, plop, it just falls apart, begging for crap to just waltz right into my engine.. luckily I noticed it before anything happened (that I know of)
I just got a cold air intake off ebay and it didnt fit without some extra pipes i had to buy seperately. I just installed it, and I haven't really tried it out yet, but I'm excited. (It's hanging below the car about an inch and a half, I hope its not going to hit something and explode.. anyone have any experience with that?)
Anyways... The point of my story is... IF YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA, MAKE SURE ITS CARB EXCEMPT! I didnt know custom intakes wouldn't pass emissions until after I payed all this money for one. I could have just gotten an Injen for practically the same price.
Have fun!
