Belt Squealing Question

After it rains or when the heater/ac is on, one of the belts in my P5 squeals and i cant figure out what it is. Anybody know what it is and how much it will cost to get it replaced? the noise is starting to pierce my brain T_T

Your AC belt needs to be changed. Might as well change out the power steering one too. Should be $15 - $20 each from the dealer.

Actually, how many miles are on the belts? You may be able to just tighten them if they're not that old. I would pick up a Krikit tension gauge to see what the actual tension is as well, so you're not tightening just based on feel.

As for the belts themselves, I prefer Goodyear Gatorbacks. Very high quality and almost impossible to make squeal.

......unless you have all aluminum lightened pulleys and UDP. Then it's a different story...with correct tension. Not gonna overtension into bearing failures to not squeak. Just went back with Gates micro-V and no problems. At least that's what I experienced. No squeaks since then........

As far as OP story, sounds like they might just need a touchup on tension due to stretching.

as far as how old the belt is i have no idea. i bought the car used in june of this year. also how much is it for someone at the dealer to replac it? im not a mechanic and dont wantto mess anything up lol

Look at the belts (is the underside developing cracks perpendicular to the belt length)? Replace. Look fine - no cracks and the flat side (no grooves) isn't very shiny - just tighten.

If you bought a metric socket set (with extensions) you could do this yourself.

But do not go to the dealer for this - any mechanic can do it (and cheaper too ;) )

So...you're saying that correctly tensioning goodyear gatorbacks on an aluminum pulley/udp setup causes squeal? I seriously doubt the OP has to worry about that.

Well, kinda....the humidity or not had bearing on it, AC would make it do it a bit. They were plenty tight to not make noise. The Gates aren't even as tight as I had the GY's and they don't have any noise............doubting OP has all aluminum pulleys either.

Weird. Are you sure the Gates belts were looser? I don't know about you, but I'm terrible at measuring belt tension without any sort of gauge.

^^^ Holy hell! That's crazy... Dealerships are such a rip off.

OP, where are you located? I could do them for you or I'm sure another local member would help out.

Right, I just mean from my perspective, that's a rip off. I can get the belts from Autozone for, what $8 or $9 bucks? And take the 30mins to put them on in my garage. And I prefer the piece of mind knowing that I installed them, not someone at the dealership. But I'm weird like that. It's all gravy.:)

Sorry to thread jack. Anyway, the belts probably just need to be tightened. I think the only sockets you need are a 12mm and a 14mm and it doesn't take very long.

u no any links that can show me how to tighten the belts with photos?

Im having the same prob with mine when i turn the ac on. Pics of where to tighten exactly or a link would help me as well!!

Check your alt belt as well! My alt belt would only slip when i turned on the a/c...

Make sense? Maybe. The extra load on the alt for the a/c components? [shrug]

Hmm, k, i haven't even really looked where to tighten the belts at... Need to look it up online and take a closer look at my engine bay. I know my belts are less than two years old. Ive never had a vehicles belts sqeul as much as this one has started to, so have never tightend any belts on any cars!

Yeah, Gates took less tension to be quiet and no flop when revving. All I usually go by, never been issue. Most of the time when belts are correctly tensioned, you should just be able to twist it 90 degrees when tightened on longest span between pulleys. Had to tension GY's noticeably more to get near being noisefree but would still make noise when first started in morning if AC was used.
