Bad Smoke

I had a 92 Toyota supra turbo that did the same thing. It turned out to be the turbo oil seal. Toyota eventually replaced turbo after 40,000 miles of testing!
What happens is just like bad valve stem seals in a old motor. The oil leaks in when turned off. When you start it, it burns it away and then smoke goes away because of positive pressure in the turbo while running.

This morning, after turning off the car after a 2-mile short trip upon a cold start, I noticed some white smoke (not a lot) coming out of the left pipe for about a minute or two. Strangely, the right pipe had no smoke at the same time. Is it normal? Condensation or the turbo seal thing you guys seem to be talking about?

UPDATE: dealer checked it and said it's normal condensation. I don't notice it after running the car warm for a while. I guess dealer was right.

Yep, see my post "blown turbo". Sounds familiar...Bad batch of seals in models built August 2006. My CX has been at the dealer 1 week now waiting for the new turbo to be shipped. Noticed big cloud of smoke just after starting up. Wasn't white either! Then smelt burning oil even from the inside of the car. Drove right to the dealer and was told "probably a bad batch of gas!" NOT!

Very Bad Smoke

Well it happened yesterday when I started my car, I had the worst trail of blue smoke I have ever seen. It truly looked as if my engine had blown or something, and there was a bad burning smell associated with it !

Took the car home and called the dealer, then later when I was going to rush to the dealer as I had a late afternoon appt. The car had zero smoke ? But let me tell you the burning smell (I put my nose near the exhuast) smelled like burning brake pads. Dark blueish smoke and bad smell -

Thoughts and comments welcome.....

Turbo seals, you need a new turbo.

Thanks @all for reporting this issue here in the forum.

I'll suggest that each one write the year the vehicle was build and at which mileage this he white smoke comes. It may be helpful to predict/see when this happen approximatively.

Thanks for your corporation.

NB: I have no smoke but just like this if you see some:

CX-7, AWD: Year: 2007, Miles: 599 miles

Mileage & Year report

My car is an 07 GT AWD w/tech

White smoke started @ 5k , blue smoke started at 7800k

I will keep everyone one up with part II of this when I hear from the dealer.

Car is Ready ?

Well my dealer called me this afternoon and said my car is ready ? When I asked what they found, did the 2 recalls (shutter valve & PCM) could not replicate the problem with the smoke......what an incompentent ass of a technician. If my car smokes again I will write a letter to mazda and the BBB about the imcompetence, and I know it will ! Fuking agravation !!!

to be continued.........

Smoke disappears ??

Well I got my car back on Friday and took it for a test drive "just to make sure" - oddly enough no smoke at all ! So they did 2 recalls Shutter Valve and PCM recalibration. Car drives fine the CEL is off, thats nice to see after so long of having it on and off and on again....still think there is an issue with the smoke that will return, time will tell

Smoke saga continues w/Smell

Well its only 5 days with my car back and the smoke has become a daily occurrence, most notable when the engine is cold. I now have a constant odor when ever I get out of the car after driving it and it sometimes creeps into the passenger compartment. Something is definitely gone bad on this car and I am thinking turbo seals. I think it will only worsen as time goes on, I have decided to video tape it and bring it to the dealer. Since they cant seem to replicate the problem, I will give them the footage.

to be continued.......

I have almost 20k on my cx. After doing the pcm, tcm flashes and the recalls, the car is driving perfectly. No CEL, bad smoke or any other complaints.

WWNJCX7, can you put your video on youtube so that we can see what it looks like? I got some white smoke on cold mornings, but no smell and it seems to be just condensation. If you can post the video, it might educate us all on what this issue might be.

Turbo Seals

I am convinced that I have a bad seal (seals) on my turbo unit. The oil must be leaking by when the engine is off, then burns on the next ignition cycle. Based on the smell and color its definitely oil. Oddly enough the car has not smoked in the past week ?? I am thinking maybe when its gets cold again and things contract more, the problem will be back. I will wait till January to bring it to the dealer.

As for the white smoke incidents this past summer, most definitely not the same thing and it was not condensation......another mystery of the bad smoke ??

I pulled away from my house this morning and left a huge cloud of smoke behind me. Definitely smelled like something was burning and was absolutely not condensation. I'll be bringing it to the dealership on Monday to try to diagnose. My CX7 was manufactured 3/06, AWD. My CEL never came on. Did the CEL come on for others, did you lose compression as well? Overall the vehicle drives fine, but there is obviously something wrong.

Our CX-7 blows a lot of white smoke on a cold start, but I've only noticed it during the winter and it has been quite cold here (Winnipeg) -25C and worse. I look in the rear view mirror and it looks like I'm driving in a fog.

When it's been really cold (say -30C) our 7 blows out some black smoke for a few seconds. I've assumed it's just a richer burn??? to warm up the car or something (I'm not an expert as you can tell ;-) ).

Not sure if that helps any.

I had the same deal. look here to see my pics ->http://www.mcx7.com/showthread.php?t=1523&page=2

Next time it happens to you take a pic with your cell phone or movie is event better.

The dealership replaced my turbo right away after seeing the pics, they had prior experience with ms6 doing the same.

Again thing a batch of turbos had bad seals.

Duh, a movie! I don't know why I didn't think about that! I'm getting smoke pretty bad (blue smoke when the turbo heats up) and am 100% confident it is the turbo seals. I'll need to bring it in for service, but don't know why I didn't think to bring some evidence. Thanks!

no prob, if your service guys are good they will just ask if you can possible send them the pic/movie via email so they can send the request straight to Mazda and start the ordering :)

So I am new here just was doing a little research to see if I was the only one with cx-7 problems. Not to say I am Happy to see it, but am Happy to see I was not the only one. Unfortunately, my dealer was an ass hole!

At less then 500 miles my car said I had a gas cap problem. I brought it to the shop and they had it over night. The next morning I came in to pick it up and they told me that nothing was wrong with the sensor. The dumb ass tech then walked me outside and taught me a lesson. He opened up the gas cover took off the cap and proceeded on telling me how to properly close a gas cap. (As if after 15 years of driving, I have never filled up a car with gas before.) Repeatedly the sensor went off and over and over again the same old story of how nothing is wrong and this is how you screw on a gas cap. Low and behold, towards the end of my cx-7 ownership a recall came out. Who was stupid now!

Now at 35,000 miles, the car had a horrible cranking and grind came out of the engine area. I called the service department to have them come and pick it up so they could fix it. (I purchased the extended warranty for 100,000 miles so it was still covered by my dealer and Mazda) They told me that it was fine to drive in the next morning and they would look at it then. So I drove over 25 miles to the dealership and when I got there, the car was stalling and over heating. Smoke and burning smells were billowing out everywhere. They then looked at my car and told me that it was a faulty pulling system and replace the belts and gears.

The nightmare continues: At 41000 my husband takes the car to work to get its oil changed after work at the same time the check engine light appears. Therefore, he took it to the dealer. The dealer told him they could only see it by appointment only. So He left and as soon as he was about 3 miles away the car died. He called them up and they came and got it.

The first tech to call me informed me that the car died because the battery was dead. I then asked him, if that was so why did the car start in the first place I thought the battery starts up the engine?

He then proceeded to tell me that once they replace the battery they could explore any other problems with the vehicle.

While it was there they proceeded to tell me the opened up my engine and could see build up. In addition, that they were voiding my warranty because I never did any oil changes. When I gave them proof the called me a liar. I had my oil changed every 3000 miles as recommended.

So after them having my car for a month Mazda, and my dealer void the extended warranty. They then told me that my only option was to put a new engine in the cx-7. Moreover, that would cost me $10,000, but if I promised to continue to be a loyal customer and say nothing bad about them, they would fix everything for $6000.

After I gave them permission to replace the engine, they informed me that the turbo itself is also out! I informed them that they never true told me what was wrong with the vehicle and if I was dropping $6000 on a new engine, the least they could due was replace it. Low and behold anther $500 for a turbo.

Therefore, I see all of you had smoke issues. Well be careful so did we. Now I own a dead engine in my garage and a new engine in the cx-7!
