BAD MPG advice PLEASE...

Hi. I am a newbie here and hope I am posting in the right place.

I am a new CX-7 owner and in fact, this is my first Mazda. I have been tradionally a life time Honda owner, but my last vehicle was a 07 H3.

Here is my issue:

2010 AWD Grand touring with roughly 325 miles.

The first tank of gas upon delivery got me 182 miles. The second fill up should get me 165 miles. I am no mathmatician, but the #'s dont lie. Even the car is telling me I am averaging 8.9 mpg. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??

I called service and the technician told me that for the first 1000 miles the vehicle will get horrible gas mileage because it is in a "learning" process. (unfortunately the salesman didnt bother to mention that)

Does this sound right to any of you owners?? I am using the premium gas and do just about all city driving. Please let me know what you think, I hope nothing is wrong with the vehicle because for the 1 month that I have owned it, I really like it so far. I am in shock to think that a 4cyl would get such horrible mileage, turbo or not - BTW, I am not a lead foot. My H3 got better mileage with an inline 5. Please share your thoughts.....

Mpg

I can only speak from my personal experience with regard to MPG on this vehicle. I own a 2007 AWD GT and I average 240 miles per tank with city driving, the best I ever got was 285 out a tank with all hwy driving. To say that this car is a pig on gas would be an understatement, my last ride was a Toyota Tacoma 4 door long bend "TRD" pick up truck which got MUCH better mileage than my CX. If I drive this car hard in city driving I am lucky to see 185 miles from a full tank and remember I have to use premium fuel....OUCH

Had I know about the dismal mileage I would have considered other choices. The good news is that it delivers more smiles per mile than most other cars.

Enjoy the ride

I think you have an issue that needs looked into.

I have a 2007 AWD, and although there have been a few flashes, and despite the "break-in", I have NEVER got less than 280 miles on a tank - and that was city with full cargo load.

In my first year I easily averaged about 18.5 mpg, I currently get closer to 20. Most of my miles are more highway than city, but there is NO REASON this platform should be giving you numbers so low. Something doesn't sound right about it.

Good luck.

Too early to be concerned in my opinion. However: with a high performance turbo engine and you want good mileage you need to keep a light steady gas peddle and keep rpm under 2400 unless you really want the power. My 2007 FWD slowly improved over the first 2500 miles and I now get 20 to 22 mpg depending on how much I use the AC. My driving is 80% suburban driving. Another point is I don't brother guessing my fuel consumption using the fuel gauge. Calculate your mileage by deviding miles driven by the gallons used and use a 3X take average.

That does sounds like a big discrepancy..

I have a 2009 FWD and the worst I got was 17.5 mpg and I mashed that entire tank.

Things have gotten better as I installed a CP-e CAI :)

I do notice there are times to max out on the power output. Cruise til you get some momentum going, then open up that throttle. Off the line acceleration will kill your tank.

I had an 07 AWD and got 300 a tank to and from work (mostly highway) but stayed pretty average to that. In 07 it required Premium as well although I never ran one tank of premium in the car on my dime. I ran regular the entire 24 months I owned the vehicle with ZERO problems. The learning curve is for driving a boosted vehicle. Let the turbo spool and do the work, dont try and add more gas. Takes a while but try not letting RPM's get over 3k-3500 and less if you can.

re: CX-7 fuel consumption

9.5 sounds tragic.

Not apples/apples, my 2007 FWD GT routinely gets 300-340 miles per tank, about 80% highway.

I've never had an all-city tank to compare.

MPG is typically 20-24, and yes, that's a wide range.

Worst ever was 17.5 mpg, all highway, but out west and "making time" on 75mph speed limit highways.

Yeah, you know when I drive the CX-7 its usually only in town and I tend to be pretty heavy on the go pedal. I get about 17mpg. When my wife drives it to and from work regularly, she gets 22-23mpg in a 60/40 hwy/city split.

2010
AWD
4500 miles
13 city
21 hwy
15 mixed
For a 4 cyl this sucks.

My G37 Coupe gets 15 city, 18 mixed, 26 hwy.
And I'm always kicking it.

Just drove from Ft Rucker AL to Ocala FL. I already had 89 miles of mixed city and suburban driving. Tank ended up gettng 407 miles my best. I was getting horrible mileage here recently. I was getting gas at Walmart. Found a mom and pop place that has 100% petrol NO METHANOL! I believe that had a lot more to do with it. I have a 07 CX7 with 380000 miles

i was in the same situation, 07 GT FWD with only 24k miles, getting between 14-17 mpg.
never saw anything close or about 20 mpg on mixed driving.
finally took it to the dealer for the bad gas mileage problem and the lack of power below 2k rpms, the reflased the software (TSB) and did a injector and throttle body cleaning and the driveability is night and day. havent had a chance to calculate my mpg yet but just by the way it drives, i can tell i will see an improvement.

Well just came back from MI and the best gas mileage I got on my 07 awd is 240 per tank going at 68 mph, did noticed that my rpm was running at times 400 faster than normal since usually at 68 mph my rpm are at 2,200. One more year before it's paid off and it's gone. The vehicle is great except for the gas mileage wich my 74 camaro was getting better gas mileage once it was tune up. Pretty Sad!!

Last Madza that I purchase.

Don't know why you think that we are funny but Hey! everybody has their own opinion, as for myself, this is my third mazda and the worst one for mpg. Main reason that I bought this vehicle was due to their advertizement about how good this car was on mpg which is totally wrong, well at least for my car.

It's funny that you'd write off all Mazdas because their heavy, AWD, turbo crossover/SUV doesn't get good gas mileage.

Guess that you did not read my reply, this is my 3rd Mazda!! So because of great past experience with them and their advertisement; I purchase this vehicle. Guess that I should had waited a year or two then read these posts.
