Bad first dealer experience.

Ok, so i decided to take my car in for the first service, the 8000 km service. (I have 4700 kms). I went in Friday to make the appointment to make them aware of my concerns. They are as follows:
1. my head unit has reset itself about 6 times since i've had the car (2 months). I told them in advance so that they could get me a replacement unit if necessary.
2. My car pulls to the left. I was also aware of the allignment TSB that i saw posted here. I brought in a printout of it.
3. the notorious "clunk". Yeah i've got it. Minor right now, from what i'm reading here, could be really bad down the road.
4. oil lube filter etc, pretty basic

I made the appointment for today. And was told it would be $49, plus any parts that are needed.

I get there, and start giving the info to the service guy. We start with the head unit. He says they will probably have to order one in as they don't keep it in stock. (That's kinda why i went in on Friday). Ok, no big deal.

I move on to the allignment. I tell him the car is pulling to the left. I put my summer's back on yesterday, and it was a little better. I tell him about the TSB AND the fact the car pulls.
He tells me he doesn't have a TSB for the Speed. He tells me "you can't believe everything you read on the net". I hand him the printout and claims that he doesn't know anything about it. It will cost me $100 to get the allignment done.

Next, i describe the clunk. I didn't tell him people on the net have it. I described it. Told him how the "right rear makes a clunking sound going over uneven pavement, ripple bumps etc."
No problem, they'll check it out.

I hand over the keys, and the mechanic takes it out. (Should have gone with him....but hindsight is 20/20).

I go to read the newspaper, then walk out to check on my car. Not there. I wait, and sure enough, 2 mechanics come back with it (test drive #2).

They do the lube filter and whatever and i go to get my keys and pay.

I'm told they didn't hear the clunk, "2 mechanics went and it didn't do it". I'm about ready to throw the mechanic in the friggin trunk and take him for a ride to hear it. The parking lot is under construction and i saw the idiot purposely hit every mud filled pothole there was in the lot (this after i spent an hour cleaning my baby yesterday and put on the Harts).

It gets better. The other service guy goes on to say that the head units are on back order, and it will be 3 months to get one in (Best Buy has them in stock). I say fine, i'll deal with mine until then, please order it. The service manager hears this and corrects the tech, saying "we'll pull the radio and send it to be repaired...it will take 3 weeks". I tell him that i'm not dealing w/o a radio for 3 weeks, plus it's new, it's deffective. i want a new one. I said this all nicely. I deal with a-holes every day and don't want to be one.

He says that is the procedure and Kenwood won't just hand over a new unit w/o trying to fix it first.

I then go to pay the final bill....$82. What?

Apparently, the $49 i was told is just the labour charge. The parts, that i didn't think i would need as what could possibly be broken on a new car, were the oil and filter at $20.

So what did i get for $82 you ask ?

an oil, lube filter (with Mazda sludge oil), they lubed the door locks, topped up the washer fluid, and "inspected" my wiper blades.

Talk about BS!

I'll be writing to the sales manager, who is actually a cool guy (he asked me if i had got my watches, and talked to me about the car for about 10 minutes). I'm going to let him know what i thought about my first service experience. If nothing gets done...my business from now on goes elsewhere. My dealer is far from home and based on today, certainly not worth the drive.

Has anyone had any similar dealer runaround? I'll be taking care of my own oil changes (synthetic) from this point onwards. I figure $30 for the oil and filter...plus i get to play mechanic for a couple of hours.

Not my experience at all.
Also an Ontario dealership (Peterborough).
Went in with the clunk and an oil smell, complained about the car pulling to the left.
They heard the clunk, and had to order new bushings. Called Mazda and said there is a TSB on it. OK.
The found an oil leak on the turbo return line, fixed it.
Called Mazda again about the alignment, Mazda sent them the alignment specs.
Cost $0.
Went back today for the new bushings. Complained about my deck not ejecting CD.
They installed the bushings, and are ordering a new deck for me, even though mine wouldn't give them a hassle while they had it.
I get to keep my deck until the new one arrives.
Cost $0.
Every time I have been picked up my car it has been washed.
My dealer experiences have been quite good. They all know me by name.

i went through the same BS with my old dealer. hint "old" they drove my car all the time always said they didnt hear anything. I also have had trouble with my kennwood and have had it replaced without sending it in. Ever since i went to my new dealer it has been very good. the service mngr. there is extreamly helpful and is knowledgeable with our cars (mp3, msp) so this helps, the last dealer didnt have a clue. mp3 what???? bottom line some dealers just have bad service, if there is another dealer near by give them a shot. BTW: i was always very polite when dealing with my old dealer, yet they refused to help me out. My new dealer i respect them they respect me. Quality service is key.

Damn Logan! I'm considering driving to Ontario just to get that kind of service (j/k). I wasn't sure if it actually still existed but apparently courtesy still exists in "Peterborough".

My MSP also pulls left slightly at moderate speeds and is very noticeable at highway speeds. I'm afraid of having a similar experience to MS MSP's so let us know how this works out in the end. Also if you get some true resolve for these issues let us know how you got them.

i have yet to have an issue, but i am confident that if/when i do my dealer will understand and deal with the issues no questions asked.. i guess i got lucky buying from the #1 mazda dealer in the U.S (thats what the guy said) heh but what do i know im only 17..

i had bad experience at dealership...my dad's credit wasnt quite good so at first we had 6% apr... then when all papers r about to signed.. we notice the apr went down to 4% with same exact price i am gonna be paying.....

That sucks, I took mine in before I read about the turbo in 2nd gear problem, rattle in my dask, and a slight sputter and didnt get charged anything. Everything on ur car is under warranty and should be free!

A.P.R. =Annual Percentage Rate. That's the percentage of the price of the car that you pay in interest each year.
A lower number is better. I got 0% APR for 5 years. :)

The best way to hurt a dealer is to not take your car there for service. You will find that if you switch dealerships and complain about the last dealer you get treated very well since a smart dealer knows that service is where the money is.

As far as what you paid for a oil change....that is a rip

my experiance sucked,
My first time in, i was told I didnt owe anything for the service, then the next day they call me and say I owe $160 bucks......nedless to say I didnt pay.

then I had something wrong with the front end (2nd visit) and got the technichian to look at it. they had it all day and when I got in they said there was nothing wrong. BS, I know my car and I know there is something wrong. so another guy took it again and came back, removed the front wheels and the rotors were warped. after a 2 hour wait and almost punching the manager in the neck, I got the car fixed.

then I had to have my driver side mirror replaced,(car was vandalized) so I ordered the mirror in 2 weeks in advance to avoid any bs. I even gave them the part number and had them read it back to me, but needless to say they oredered in the wrong part.

I am just about fed up. if a "master technitian" cant fix my car, then who can.

oh yeah, and I had a bulb out in the front of the car so they thought they would do me a favour and put my hyper white in, they scratched it tp s*** and installed it wrong.\

so screw my mazda dealer....................

I don't like the sound of all this.
I was just about to phone in Mazda today to make an appointment for my first oil change and hoepfully, while the car up in the air, they can swap my wheels back on.
I was going to complain about the clunk noise on my car too. But i don't think they'll do anything about it...

18600 mi, never seen a dealer floor. The one time I did let a dealer do the work, they put the unidirectional tires (I have a P5, thread jacking here) on BACKWARDS on the replacement rim. My car will NEVER see a dealer for scheduled maintenance.

I think what is important to remember is that dealers are independant franchises, and they are not all the same.

I didn't think I would take my car in to the dealer once I got it, but I've been so impressed I probably will keep going to them.
Maybe even for oil changes! Hmm, maybe not, I like doing those myself, even though I get dirty.

Hey, just out of curiosity... which dealer is this?

Yeah, what dealership is this?
I just got off the phone with Avante Mazda ( Yonge and Steeles) with the Service department name Jeff. I made an appointment for an oil change. They charge $24.95 + for oil, filter and labour.
I believe it's $16.95 + tax for oil filter, and labour if you supply your own oil. That's what i went with, because i'm switching over to Mobil 1 like most of you guys! :D Btw, What do you guy's recommend? 5W 30 or 10W 30?

I asked about a wheel swap from winters ~~ Summer and they told me they charge $24.95! Geez, I asked them if they could reduce that cost, but No luck.

Also, i mentioned about the suspension clunk and they told me they would have to check it out visually or go for a test drive. Then, i thought about MS MSP's story and i didn't ask them to make a note of that. But i think i'll talk to the guy about it during the oil change.

Hope my first expereince with this dealer goes fine!
Btw, this IS NOT my original dealership i bought my car from. So no one knows me by name (Logan)

This is absolutely true, they are all independent and actually have very little to do with the corporation who's company's cars they sell. Having said that, many dealer mechs (not the master techs, who are usually good guys) are total idiots. This is not a terrible generalization (okay, it sort of is), the quality of the mechs at dealers is just low, I cant tell you why. More likely, their skills are up to par but they are just lazy. I watched the 18yo put my tire on backwards, not saying a word. When he was done, AND had mounted it on the car, then I casually walked over to the bay manager and made a sarcastic remark about it.

On top of all that, a dealer will charge you more than just about anywhere else for ANY maintenance they perform. Their money is made in service.

thanks guys for the input. The dealer i'm referring to is Erin Mills Mazda. They are at Erin Mills Parkway and Dundas.

I live in what was formerly East York. My closest dealer is Gyro, next closest Downtown mazda, and then Westowne is closest to my present work location.

I'll be sending a copy of the letter to the Sales Manager, as i stated in my first post. I'll give him the chance to right the service department's wrongs, and based on that will decide where i go for future service.

I'm all for driveway service, and am able to do most myself, but i wanted to get the first service done at the dealer as i had the complaints. I wanted them documented and fixed.

Well i got them documented.

As for the charges, apparently what i got was the 8000 km service. 5000 km is the interval posted in our manuals.

Thanks again.

Sounds to me like American Dealers really suck. My first service was 32.00 CDN. $82 for an oil change and inspection is horse s**t. I would never go back if I were you.
