Backfiring???

Anyone else's backfire when they shift sometimes? It didn't do it when I first got it. It only seems to happen when i shift fast.

that's a common occurence at times with a turbo car, especially one as rich as our msp's. mine recently started doing it on downshifts at times.

I do it all the time.....depends on weather you're running catless, 1 or 2 cats too.

Since I replaced my stock mid pipe for a 2.5" single high flow cat, I have been backfiring the odd time. Mostly during fast shifts or down shifts.

on more or less the same topic......what do you guys think, should i gut my cats? I've got a buddy on the V-boards (nissan spec-v) thats going to do his and the dude thats doing it offered me the same deal. I wouldn't even have thought twice about it but with our cars being the way they are sometimes i'm being carefull

why gut your cats? why not replace with a nice steel core hi flow cat? That way you're still gaining performance but still as environmentally friendly as you can be. Plus your car won't stink. Not sure about the rules in Quebec, but in ontario I think there are pretty heavy fines for not having a cat, plus you'll have to put one in to pass emissions anyhow.

I have a high-flow cat and 3" DP back exhaust. Mine used to backfire when I got halfway on the gas, then let off slowly. It hasn't backfired since I started using acetone mixed with my gas.

i just did the gutting of my cats on sunday (that sounded creepy)
well, i backfired for the first time ever!!! hell yeah, not loud...made me feel like i was driving a car from Microsoft Rallysport! lol

turbo seemns to spool faster...also did a test run without the cat...doesn't sound THAT loud, might consider a valve to vent from the downpipe under boost....could be fun being quiet and as soon as you hit boost BOOM the loud exhaust

why gut the cats....cause its a freeby. I wanted to get a high flow cat but they do cost money...i realize the enviromental concerns and the smell are drawbacks but meh i don't really care. As for the fines in Quebec, yeah its pretty illegal to drive without a cat but again....i can't see a cop or transport Quebec pulling me over, jacking my car, dismateling my pipes and giving me a fine. You guys should see some of the rust buckets on the road, chances are they'll stop them before a me.

I did it, my car does things that it didn't do before.

1) backfiring, 1 time until now
2) when rolling in first it chirps the tires when u step on the gas hard
3) little less lag time
4) boost comes a little sooner
5) it feels like it breathes more
i mean, all of this have to be backed up by a dyno, i own a buttdyno so i can't give specific numbers, only feelings
it does feels better. i think for the money(lol) and time...it is worth it.
the longer cat takes the most time to gut out....but is doable.

if you don't have money for a test pipe, this is one freeby mod you can do.
no cel as of now
hope it stays that way, only about 30miles worth of driving.
i love it, i won'der how it will feel with a downpipe and a cat back at 2.5"

laters...

Mine backfired with the stock exhaust fairly regularly. With the catted downpipe even more.

I wouldn't worry about it.
