AWD necessary

I live in the city and sometimes use the expressways here in Japan.. I was wondering if it is really necessary to get AWD.. I get no snow, rain sometimes. can I just stick to FWD? What's the opinion?

Japan gets hit with monsoons, very heavy rain and wind. AWD would be helpful. If you don't think you'll be driving in that kind of weather, then FWD is good enough.

awd is a waste unless you are off road or in the snow

I disagree. I was getting onto the freeway. It was a 2 lane on ramp that turned 270 deg. I was in the inside lane and a Pontiac Grand am was in the outside lane. I was able to accelerate all the way down the on ramp hard. To the point where the back end just started to step out. And I beat the Grand Am.

There is no way I would have been able to accelerate on the on ramp like that with front wheel drive. The front end would have pushed wide.

The active-torque system sends power to the rear wheels if it senses performance driving, not just when it senses slipping. It's not as advanced as the Honda SH-AWD system since it can't send power side to side. But it is a great system. If you plan to drive your CX-7 hard, I fully recommend the AWD.
