ATX P5 Turbo Build by Richs970

Hell yea dude. I'm really glad you got it working my friend. Be careful for the first week or so and keep an eye on it to make sure everything is running fine. Welcome to the dark side my friend (thumb)

Ran great the whole trip. No bucking or lean-ness.
I <3 boost! Lol.
One problem tho. I think somethings up with my wastegate tho. I figured it was normal to spike at 10 psi once in a while but Can pretty much do it on command. I actually went over a couple times. Either my gauge is wrong, or the wastegate is not opening like it should. Any way to test it?

Take the hose connected to it and blow into it. You shouldn't be able to blow through at all. Glad to hear all is well!

So the car is still running well. I can see what everyone means about the shifting though. I'm going to install my trans cooler this weekend hopefully. Don't have the $$ for the Lentech but that might improve my situation.

Definitely have a wastegate problem too. The boost never levels off, I got it up above 12psi once the other night, and I probably could have gone higher if I'd have stayed on the gas. So right now I'm babying it, staying around like 5, which is a pretty lame way to drive after all this work I just put in, cause I can only go to about half throttle in order to keep it down. Trying to get my hands on a replacement for it asap.

Get a manual boost controller as well. It can be a safeguard and will keep you from overboosting. Do not boost past 7 or 8 psi. It'll be fine for a couple of weeks and then your transmission will start slipping. Mine is. You'll hate yourself for it later. I even have the lentech vb.

How much boost were you running when it started to slip?

stock. I don't know what the reason is. I haven't had the time or expertise to figure it out. It just needs to last me one more year and then the car is going to be torn down and rebuilt.

EDIT: Part of the reason is that I stomped on the gas pedal like a 16 year old kid often in the first couple of weeks. My mistake.

So far so good for me, been to the track with the car and its held up, thank god.

Lol yeah I haven't gotten past 75% on the throttle at all since the build. The only time I did I hit like 14 psi, so I'm not doing that again. I dont' know if you guys have ever driven without a operational wastegate, but it's surprisingly easy to build up that pressure.
And when I got the car it was almost 10 years ago, so god only knows how many times I stomped on the pedal in those 10 years. Makes sense that I'm feeling the transmission slip now.

Yeah I'm not sure what you mean about pull through or blow through. I thought the filament in the MAF just changed temperature as the air flowed over it.... Doesn't seem like it'd matter what the direction is. Come to think of it, I still haven't put the IAT in though, so that could be screwing me over a little bit too.
Doesn't seem like the MAF is screwed up tho, because below boost levels my AFR is on target hovering around 14.7.

pull/draw through = MAF in stock location before the turbo

blow through = MAF on cold pipe of intercooler.

So I've been drivin around with this busted wastegate and I haven't had time to do anything about it. It sucks pulling off the throttle so early to keep the boost from going above 6psi. Anyone know if I can troubleshoot it in any way. I know a new one is not expensive, but I haven't gotten the opportunity to buy a new one, and I have the long weekend to work on the car coming up. The stock wastegates have an adjustment dont they?
Also, I have been gettin a pretty strong turkey sound when I let off the gas. I was thinking my BOV was just a little too far from the vacuum source. But I was also reading about compressor surge, and how it can bascially cause the same type of sound. It'd be disappointing if that was the case, and I wasn't able to get rid of it. It'd also mean that the turbo I got on the forums not only had a busted wastegate, but a beat up compressor.
Anyways, I'd love it if someone could hit with with some wisdom on this issue before I start moving my BOV around and takin sht apart. In the meantime, I'll be reading as much as possible.

rich instead of dealing with the headache of the wastegate right now? buy yourself a manual boost controller. You'll be able to set your desired boost and later on down the line you can buy a new wastegate.

EDIT: Get a quality one like turbosmart's boost tee. I sold mine used for 50 bucks. Look around and you'll be able to find the same

plus one on the turbosmart boost tee, that s*** is awesome

sold mine for a boostsciences boost controller....big mistake, the boostscience's sucks ass (prob why they went out of business), im going to be selling it soon to fund a new turbosmart

oh....didn't even realize that I could run it without an operational wastegate. Good to know, I wasn't looking forward to replacing that wastegate.

Edit: Hold on, I thought that boost controllers helped stop the wastegate from opening too early by bleeding out air . My problem is that I think mine isn't opening at all. Maybe I just don't fully understand the mechanics of it. I thought that the boost controller was on the vacuum line from the vac block to the wastegate, and it bled off air, allowing the wastegate to stay closed a bit longer instead of partially opening when you don't want it to. In my case I just want the wastegate to open at any time, lol. I can't even keep my foot on the gas or else I'll boost up to 15psi without the gate opening.

Oh I misread your post (hand). Yea get a working wastegate first lol. There's actually a forge for sale somewhere on here that's brand new and a great price. Look around on the FS threads.

Only forge ones I see are sold already. I'm ok with a stock one tho. Big difference??

Btw, spending some time on my other ride today:

Nope not really. The forge is just another option. If you can get your hands on a stock one, it's perfect. A lot of people go other routes cause the stock ones are so expensive from the stealership. Glad to see things coming along man (2thumbs)

Haven't posted in a while, but I figured I would in case anyone searched this topic or something and wanted an answer.
I recently replaced my wastegate. Took me a while to find the time...man, what an annoying fix that was. For future reference, it is way easier to replace a wastegate (on a GT25 at least) with it completely off the car. I screwed around with it while on the car for about 2 hours, but found no good way to get it out. I wound up removing the whole Ex. Mani/turbo/S-pipe assembly to get the wastegate off and get the new one on and adjusted the right way. That little c-clip/cotter pin on the gate is insanely easy to lose.

Now she's running pretty great, I can actually give her some gas without having to pull off before building up to much pressure. Next is a boost controller. I do get the gate opening a little bit early (probably shouldn't have threaded the actuator one more turn).
