I bought the car in pieces, so i have to put it back together

There is a white female single spade connector that splits off from the harness at the throttle position sensor. It is black with white stripe and fairly heavy gauge 12-14 maybe. What does it go to? I have the FSM wiring but, this connector is not listed ( I think). The single spade connector has 12v to negative with the key ON, but 12v to positive with key OFF. (Voltages might not be exact, there was a drop with key ON)

This is black with white stripe.

I put the head on and ran into a problem with the harness pieces. And, it wont start.

Post up a picture. I should be able to tell you what it goes to (or doesnt)

If I have to take a picture i will, but that means borrowing a camera...and waiting for daylight...

The harness to the TPS...about 4 inches before the TPS out comes a heavy gauge wire with single female connector. There is nothing else on this branch of the harness. I have looked in the manual, but no luck.

Also, how would you set up the initial timing on this? With the rotor before it reaches the #1 terminal, at the #1 terminal, or after?

I cant get the thing to start. It did run for minute but I turned it off.

The head was shaved way beyond limit. That might affect the cam relation to crank

Thanks.

I think the plug you are asking about stays empty. Get me a picture so I can make sure.

Pop the top timing cover off and make sure the intake and the exhaust cam marks are straight up and lined up with the mark on the backing plate.

Take a look down at the crank pulley and make sure the mark is at the "0" on the timing cover. Follow the dipstick tube down to see the location of the timing mark. If you cannot find the mark on the pulley look at the end of the crank pulley. There will be a notch so to speak in the middle of the pulley. it is supposed to be straight up.

Where does the single wire to the distributor go?
this is BS:
I just discovered that this mystery connector reaches and fits the single wire to the distributor. I had single wire to the distributor connected to a clown colored (white with blue and red dots) wire.

I dont know where this mystery connector goes, you may be correct. Perhaps the harness is common with the turbo...or it is cruise control or some other thing

oh hey,
yea, it is B6 EGI soch injection with 4 speed manual

an '88 economy style.

The only luxury item is the stereo controls are on the steering column...like a combination switch or cruise control would be.

Oops! I guessed a DOHC

Timing is a bit different. Same rules apply for the crank pulley and the timing marks but the cam gear is a bit different for checking the timing with one pulley.

Is the plug close to the distributor?

the mysterious white female single spade connector that splits off from the harness at the throttle position sensor? ....it might be for turbo models or something....or it powers some thing that I do need, but I dont know what.

(boom01) Never seen that.. can you post pics of these controls?

So i whent and shot couple of pics in my wagon and this plug is conected to some chip that is bolted on to the ignition.. I don't know what it is for but maybe derrick knows.

thank you
that sounds like a condensor ( capacitor)

usually these are not so important, but it might be with this system.
however, I have not found it in the book. There is one on the diagram showing connection to the coil. I dont see it on the car, though.

I just want to get the thing started.
thanks

yea when I get done I will show the car, and that funky stereo control
I never seen one and the book does not show it either.

Does the air flow meter make alot of noise? Mine is doing KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK when cranking the engine. Is that normal?

I think that is normal if you don't have air filter on.

Are you getting gas, air, and spark? Just trying to figure out why it will not start.

hey igni

I bought the car with the head removed. I just put a new head on.... getting all the hoses, grounds, electric connectors was a problem because I dont have a car to look at.

right now I am trying to get the timing belt right. When the pully marks are all lined up where should the rotor point? I am seeing the rotor point almost past #1. If I turn the dist. any it is past #1.

The mystery connector must be a condenser or something. The FSM does not talk about it (unless it is ignitior). The wiring diagram shows a condenser connected to the positive side of the coil.

But, the parts diagram of the distributor shows an small box with a wire connector. It is not identified, but I can only guess it is condenser. Usually these are not required for starting, but if any knows then speak up. Is the "black box" bolted to the outside of an D4R86-22 distributor required for operation?

Is it normal for the AFM flap to be clack, clack, clacking while cranking?

I have taken off the air intake hose to keep from fouling plugs.... to keep the fuel turned off while I try to figure the timing on this thing. It should fire on fluid if I get it timed right. Right?

Also, I wanted to make sure I getting primary voltage because i am not sure if all the computer grounds are where they should be.

So, I am getting voltage to the coil 12v to positive side with key on.

I was getting 6 volt to negative side with key in start. I dont think it is anymore or I did not test correctly the first time. The flow chart in the FSM is strange.... It says if you dont get 6v to negative with key in start, then check/replace coil. That means that test should be done with the coil connected up? Also does it mean 6v to positive side or negative. Polarity of the negative side of the coil, I mean...confusing
