Anyone knowledgeable in dash cams/in-car cams?

I would like to utilize a digitally recorded camera mounted facing out of the front windshield. I'm trying to avoid getting blamed for accidents or being convicted for something i didn't do. Would like a cam that is hard wired into the car rather than some portable non-sense and that starts recording automatically when the car is on.

i haven't seen any camera's that are hard wired into a car before besides reverse camera's that don't record

but i know i want a GoPro HD Hero for Christmas

maybe if you have any officer friends you could ask what they use in police cars... but the GoPro Hero seems promising

when i worked for comcast all their trucks were fitted with cameras that do exactly what you are talking about. they had accellerometers that, when tripped, would imbed the previous 30 seconds and the 30 seconds after it was tripped in the recorded memory

by doing that it saves recording space (and therefore size of the unit and hardware).

essentially if you were to get in an accident the video would show the situation that you were in just before the accident occurred and your reaction or results afterwards

only problem was the damn thing would go off when you hit a decent pothole or some train tracks, or if you had to stop abruptly for whatever reason without impact. we were kinda limitted in how many times a week we could set the thing off before we got repremanded.

at the end of the week all we did was pull a hardwired usb out of the shop and connect it to the mounted camera to load our week's incidents

i can't remember what it was called but it was hardwired to the car's battery and it was mounted on the mirror

What made you want to do this out of curiosity? Were you blamed for something that didnt occur? Seem only practical for business cars/trucks like a taxi or somthing where your transporting citizens. (scratch)

Seems like a good idea maybe for a parent with a teen driver too although I would never do that to my kid.

i got falsely accused of street racing and going 103 mph.

i was on the expressway stuck behind some traffic; there was an opening in the next lane and the car in front of me(BMW 335) changed lanes and sped off at full speed and after about 5 seconds i did the same but not at such a high rate of speed. i reached about 85-90 mph and the cop was in the emergency lane using laser. the cop pulled out after the BMW passed but before i passed him. He said we were racing and that i was going 103mph which turns out to be the exact speed that the BMW was accused of going.

Panasonic Toughbook Arbitrator. You can set a buffered recording period, so it will capture and save video from before the record function is activated. You can set just about any kind of switch as a trigger, and/or tie to the car's speedometer to trigger a certain speed.

What you're looking for is Law Enforcement Grade stuff. And you're going to pay for it.
