Anyone get a "dumb" key (spare for Smart Key)?

My wife is loving her new, optioned out GT (doesn't hurt that we got it for almost $10k off!). The Smart Key is very trick.

Here's the question: can I get a spare key to carry around on my key chain for emergencies that isn't a Smart Key? I'd rather not carry my copy of the Smart Key around all the time if I'm hardly ever going to drive her car, but I do want a key to her car on me on the off chance that she loses hers, etc. Any ideas?

Thanks.

You should have two Smart cards.
Each one contains a mechnical key. Just pull it out from one and carry it with you, and your wife can have the other Smart card.
You should be able to open the vehicle and drive with it. Read the manual for details.

The Mazda Smart key is specially made by Denso (same as NAVI maker) so that it can fit inside a man's wallet and sustain the pressure of your rear end if you sit on it. It is that hard... (Unlike the boxy Lexus/Toyota ones.)

I had the dealer make me a spare emergency key (the pull-out key from the smart card), which I put in a magnetic box under my bumper. Note that even the emergency key is "chipped" (it has a transponder that must be programmed) which the dealer will charge you for. I think my dealer charged me $70. Without programming, the key will turn but the engine will not start.

ceric, that would work if the pull-out key had a hole cut in it for my keyring, but I'm not about to go drilling into that thing! And my entire wallet is only a couple times thicker than the Smart Key; I like to travel light.

Thanks, Fish. I'll probably end up doing that. Hope no hoodlums in Colorado Springs start looking around for your ride!
