Anyone else have trouble finding a comfortable seating position? (MS3)(tall/big)

it's not the seats that are uncomfortable... it's something about the angle of the pedals or relationship of how the right leg rests... causes the right leg to ache after a while. It's cool that it doesn't affect everyone, anyways... I think I'd need to be carried if I had to drive the car for three hours....

Was it just some random guy they sold an MS3 to? or an employee

How much?

Edit: I checked Edmunds.com and their TVM pricing has it at $34,024. Its a great car, but for me, I wouldn't be able to justify the price.

off with your head.

have fun with your soobie :).. and your many spoilers and such hehe.

Seems like every year they add a spoiler to that thing...

I forsee in like 2008 the car will be able to achieve low altitude flight for short distances....

I have had my Mazda 3 for about three days now -- and at 6 Ft 1 in. I am having similar seating issues -- (I have used a miata for a daily driver for the last six years with no seating issues)

I will try the things mentioned in the post -- but my question --(not wanting to totally hijack the thread)

Has anyone changed to a different seat, purely to solve driving position issues -- ie -- not for racing etc.

thx Dale -- West Palm Beach FL

the protege5 is the same way. The gas pedal is too far to the right. You can switch to thinner floormats. it helped a bit for me. or take them out altogether. You can also buy a wider aftermarket gas pedal.

i dont think that would solve much...the seat is still on the same brackets the stock one was on.....

clos561 -- you could be right -- the problem for me seems to be thigh support on the right leg -- I was thinking a seat with a slightly longer seat base might help --- but the real problem is probably caused by the seat/pedal relationship -- oh well --- time will tell if i find a comfortable position or not --

yea when i got the ms3, it sucked at first..i was so used to slouching in my 04 3 and this has bucket seats...it took me a bit to find a place thats right...constantly adjusting my seat and steering wheel while i drove helped...id change it drive a couple miles and change again, again , again. its a matter of time

I am 6'2" and tip the scales at a paltry 200. I find that the MS3 console is a tiny bit intrusive, but I have become accustomed to driving in the position I autocross in...with my seat all the way down and my seat back in its most upright position. I slide the seat back only far enough to allow me to put my foot flat on the floor behind the gas pedal. It is almost like sitting in a go-kart. Usually, my legs are bent when I am driving so the console contacts my leg just below the knee. When I first got the MS3 I drove it home 6 hrs. My leg was a bit sore after only one rest break, but overall it wasn't that bad.

For me, it isn't bad enough that I would get rid of the car. I would call it only a minor nuisance for me.

I've definately considered replacing the seat with something aftermarket, or better yet, finding a Dodge SRT-4 seat and retrofitting into the MS... man I loved the seats on my old SRT, best factory seats I've ever sat in for hard driving.

But... wouldn't this create some issues with the side air bags or something like that? I remember reading that this would be an issue.

The one thing I noticed about my positioning is that I can relax my right elbow toward the front edge of the storage compartment while still being able to shift. My upper arm points nearly straight down at that point...

...but then I try not to slouch in the seat, so that might have something to do with it. Good posture is important! :P

FWIW, the process I went through is as follows:
-set seat back to straight up
-set overall distance front/back so leg is bent at knee maybe 30-50deg (from straight)
-(discovered seat height lever at this point) dropped to lowest setting
-barely disengage lock on seat back to allow for only a small amount of recline
-unlock steering, pull all the way out; align top edge with arched visor over instrument cluster.

I have to admit that it's just a bit of a stretch for me to reach the steering wheel, but that's because I've spent the last 8 years in a '94 Ranger that had a fixed steering wheel and no airbags. Now that I have them, I wanted to make sure it was aimed mostly toward the upper body & head than into the gut ;)
The whole 10 o'clock/2 o'clock thing was a learning experience too--I miss the old Ford steering wheel (and barely needing to raise my arms to steer)...
Bold the biggest part of this. I have ran this car on the track and strip and both have been a pleasure. The biggest problem for me (6' 5") is trying to stretch my legs. I recline the seat and scoot back to get a good strech on my legs. I have a 3 hour drive every other weekend so its not really a problem with driving long distances.

You would just have to get a resistor for the seat air bags, not really a problem. If you really want a good seat go aftermarket, there are some out there that are so comfortable you forget your in a car. They cost a good bit of money but well worth it when you get them installed.

What I did was add about 15 washers on both of the front bolts for the driver seat.I had to buy a longer bolt also since I added all the washers but It lifted the front of the seat up about 1.5",I may go a bit higher.

Shark

I'm 6'-1" and 200 lbs - I've had my (non-Speed) 3 GT for 3 months now and only in the past month I have been experiencing the same problem with the right leg. I think it's a combo of pedal position too far right, console intrusion, and seat design. I've been fussing constantly with seat position, with no luck, but I think Shark's idea of adding spacers under the front mounting bolts sounds like a great idea - I can't wait to try it!!! For me, I think the biggest problem is lack of thigh support - hopefully I can tilt the seat enough to help out.

My friend just bought a new Acrua TSX and with the 8 way power seat, you can get the right tilt for thigh support.... granted it's a different car but I realized that is what I am missing in my 3!!!

theres titlt on the 3's its a pump handle thing on the left side on my ms3 cant remember what its like on the reg 3's

Well, I went a few months without a problem and then my freak of a husband stole my keys and drove my car. Ever since then my right leg hurts when I drive. He changed the position of the seat and now I can't get it back to the way it used to be! Argh!! And yes, it's always the fault of the man that is the problem.

my opinion

I'm coming from some very nice seats in my old GTI and the new is bothering me quite a bit. My read is that there is indeed something wrong in the seat.

1. Encourages you to slouch, I can't slouch if I want to in the GTI
2. Seat bottom is too short, cuts off circulation in my hamstrings.
3. Bolster is very weak, it deflects nearly an inch while in the seat.
4. Bolster is angled instead of more vertical. This leads to more of a cutoff effect and pressure against the lower outside of my leg.

These seats are killing the car's enjoyment.
