Anybody tried the Balance Shaft Delete?

I dont think I would ever do this unles I was turning my Speed 3 into a full blown racecar and needed to save the 10lbs rotating mass. But has anybody done this?

I know there is a company that makes a liquid filled crank pulley and possibly a balance shaft thats much lighter but works better. But mainly wanted to know if anybody has tried this.

I've done it on my 3 (not a speed). I seem to recall that the balance shaft is 18 lbs., 6 lbs. of which is rotating mass in the engine for the normal 3. It also allows the engine to hold another quart of oil, which is especially good if you have forced induction. I found that my Mazda dealer doesn't charge any more for my oil changes now than before, and I can now go a bit longer between fill-ups. The only place the removal is obvious is at high RPM, and even then it's still not obnoxious. But combined with the other things I've done to my car (intake, exhaust with high flow cat, and rear motor mount insert), the car is definitely rougher and louder. If smooth and quiet is your thing, I wouldn't do the BSD.

Thanks for the info.

My Speed 3 will probably become a track terror at some point and while removing everything but the alternator belt this woul be a good addition to do as I said for a full track car.

I did the mod on my 2006 mz3 and so far I love it. As far as sound I haven't notice an increase or even any additional vibrations.

Im running the F2mazdas . com kit. Im running it in a speed3. 7 quarts of oil now. No noticble vibrations. car seams to rev a hair faster. And they have noticed on a normal 3 it was around 5hp free-up taking away the rotating mass. Since we did it we ran the new oil pan baffle at the same time. so no oil starve in turns.

We had talked to Ford employees where the motor design is from. (same motor in the FORD RANGER). the 2.3 in the ford ranger dosent have the balance shaft. cause vibrations dont care in a truck. it was easier to make the shaft, then redisign a whole motor. for car use.

to free up a little more you can run a Ford Ranger crank. dosent have the gear. saves a little more weight.

If you think about it, if other people saved 5hp on a normal Mazda 3, how much HP would saved on a MS3?

I don't know about the MS3 but on the old Sentra Spec Vs this was a very popular mod.

LOL, there has been users on other Mazda forums who've posted positive reveiws from having this mod on their MS3.

Not at all. According to Focus Sport, who sell the Cosworth one, they recommend 4 hours of install time by a professional mechanic.
