Any police officers here?

I ******* hate police. Mainly because there's is NO consistancy to their decisions - my aunt has gotten out of being caught driving under the influence 3 F-ing TIMES already. Meanwhile I have (had) a clean record and I get ticketed for SLOWLY rolling through a stop sign? The reason for my ticket instead of just a warning?-no doubt because my car is orange and "looks fast". F police. Not only am I contesting this latest ticket but I'm thinking of requesting a jury trial just to be a PITA for them. It's horseshit. All cops can eat the peanuts out of my s*** if you ask me.

Quick questions,

You guys say about fighting for the speeding ticket, what if you were pulled over at middle of no where on your road trip to somewhere? I mean, it would require you to show up at the court of the town where you got pulled over right? If this is the case, what do you guys do about this?
You plan a business trip for the week of your court date and tell them you can't make it...when they reschedule, go on vacation. 3rd time's a charm, the cop won't even remember the incident and you can claim anything. If you're lucky he won't show in which case you get off.

I got pulled over for going 35 in a 25...I hadn't been on the road for more than 1/4 mile and where I got pulled over, I was staring at a 35 mph sign. The b**** was having a bad day because she ripped me out about it like I was drinking and driving going 65 through a school zone a 3:00 in the afternoon. She had been following me for the past mile so I was being cautious...I honestly didn't know it was a 25 zone. She only gave me a warning thank god...I would have taken it to court. The next day I looked for the 25mph sign and found it hidden behind an overgrown tree 20ft from the intersection where I turned onto the road. It was invisible when turning onto the road from my direction.

Right on Bro, I can feel your frustration, most cops are ******* dick heads cause it's fun to them to be that way, they love getting on our nerves

dude, thats why they give you some leeway, to account for the doppler shift and what not... they can't magically clock you going 80 when youre going 50... its not a big conspiracy by the man to **** with you
That's funny that you bring that example up. Because in April of 2002 I was traveling at 50mph in a 45mph zone with the cruise control on. I was pulled over because an officer clocked me at 80mph.

Plus while I was in college I knew most of the campus and local officers, and they showed me that things like that can be done.

Damn,

So I'm pretty much scewed if I were to get pull over in the middle of no where..

On the plus side, tickets from out of state usually don't make it back to your home state driving record.

It's not much but it's something. (shrug)

What are your rights in court? My brother-in-law just got his first ticket and he is 18. He was caught doing 56 in a 40mph zone. When I got my last ticket I went to court and plea bargained to lesser charge. I was clocked going 45 in a 25 and I plea bargained that down to a 39 in a 25 which only gives me 3 points and my insurance doesn't find out. I told my b-i-l to plea bargain it the same way so he doesn't get the 4 points. I also heard that if the officer doesn't show up at court, you can just say your innocent and the judge will throw out the case. is this true? What is the best way to fight the ticket?

contest it if the cop is a no show and it is thrown out normally, otherwise take the plea bargain

Yeah... that doesn't work in Michigan anymore. :( The cop doesn't have to be there. (notcool)

The prosecutor is usually pretty good about plea bargaining, though. The last ticket I got, I actually had to rap with the judge instead of the PA! Man, was that stressful. (wow)

Actually when I went to court, I went to the prosecutor in the beginning of the night and ask to plea bargain the ticket. My mistake was that if I only waited to until later, I probably would have been able to get away with it because the officer who stopped me did not show up. Can you still plea bargain a ticket if you wait until you are called? I know in the beginning of the night, they ask if people want to speak to the prosecutor before court starts. Is that the only time you can speak to the prosecutor? I want to tell my b-i-l to wait and see if the cop who stopped him shows up first and then if he sees him to ask to see the prosecutor for a plea bargain. What should be the order of events?

Anybody know if this is the same in New Jersey?

hmmm, well i didn't know that the no-show didn't work in MI, so make sure it is valid in your state. I'm not sure how you can be absolutely certain the cop didn't show up, I just looked around all the people in the court and he was not present. You talk to the prosecutor before the judge calls you. He either offers you a plea bargain or not. If you accept it you plead guilty to the reduced charge and the judge slaps you with what he thinks is fair. If you think the cop is not there you can decline the plea bargain and enter your own plea of not guilty to the judge with some bs story. If the cop is there, he may argue and the judge will rule in his favor. Anyway, check to make sure the cop has to be there in your state

Umm...I don't think the doppler affect applies anymore. They use lasers now so unless you are talking about objects moving at or close to the speed of light there will be no shift.

However, there is a margin of error caused by the angle at which they clock you. The most accurate reading comes from the radar being in the middle of the road but usually the cops are off to the side.

Laser radar also requires the officer to aim it at your car...if he moves it slightly, he could get the reading of a car heading in the opposite direction. Furthermore, the margin of error increases if they move the radar to follow your car as you drive by. That reading is merely the speed at which the officer is moving the radar gun, not the speed of your car.

Laser/LIDAR use is VERY rare, nearly all areas use radar.

Wait , I have riden in patrol cars for a while now. I have been a dispatcher for about 2 years now in the Sheriff Dept. and have been in my department for about 3.25 years. Mobile radar is fairly accurate. They have a radar gun in front and one in back for the people that come from the back when the car is parked. Your screwed both ways even when driving. They have even let me use the radar so I can learn how to use it. They have to calibrate it before they can use it for the day with tunning forks. Not all have to be calibrated though. As for getting your speed they can either speed match you or radar or even laser. It also depends how crazy you are driving or if you acting like an idiot. That is why they leave there windows open when they are parked sometimes to hear if you are stopping or not. One thing I can say is if your not an ass with them they will most likely give you warnings. But as for rolling at a stop you have to make a complete stop or else you are running a stop sign. I plan on going for Deputy sometime next year. I love the adrenalin rush you get when you are in a chase or when you respond to an emergency call. Its fun! But then again this is not for everyone. But to say cops suck is just wrong. You probably got one that hates our cars cuz I know a couple in my city or county that do.

Well I hope people don't get scared cuz there is someone that works in the same field of law enforcement. Hey, I am an enthusiast just like everyone else. In fact I can give you advise on what tghe law are. I have been studying up on the Revised Statutes. Any Az guys can ask me.

Last time I went to fight a ticket, they wouldn't let me see a judge. They told me I just had to pay it.

I need to write a letter to someone about this ('cause that's only like... EXTREMELY illegal for them to do) but I don't know who... the govenor?

Yeah... but aren't pedestrians illegal on the freeway? Besides... I think Texas cops would know better than to stand in front of traffic!!
