Any photographers in here?

I don't like to tell guys this, but...your sister is hot. She has a photogenic face, at least. I'd take some more of her to practice your focusing skills.

Other pics are nice, but you need to work on composition. I think some of the locations are nice but something is lost in those last few pictures.

Don't worry about saying my sister is hot, it doesn't bother me like it would bother most guys. That pic we were just sitting on the subway and she just started making faces when i pointed the lens at her and thats what I got. She is going into theatre and is an aspiring actress so she damn well better have a photogenic face. If I can get out to Chicago more often or when she comes home I can get her to a studio and I can practice there.

I hear ya on the other 2. The heart in the sand and the pathway don't really stand out to me. If it wasn't so cold when i was out, I would've thought about better composition.

No, the rear door was open. It looked odd I'm sure. It also probably was strange to see a car folowing so close AND using a flash. After the first set of pics I realized the fash was not of use in the conditions I was shooting. I could have used full power but the recycle times would have really hampered the shoot. I ended-up depowering the flash to 1/64th so I could know exactly when the shutter was triggered. Without the flash I wouldn't know if I had taken a picture or not since there no aural or mechanical feedback when I'm sitting in another vehicle away from the camera.

I'll have to check out that sticky pod...although you won't believe the lengths I'll go to to avoid having to buy accessory camera equipment.

Does you camera have a 2 sec delayed remote setting? That way you can hit the remote and get your hand back on the steering wheel or below the dash so you can't see the remote.

PP questions

I've been away from this thread for awhile, mainly because I was busy with work and not taking many pics.

I took these photos a couple of weeks ago on a trip to Idaho. Do the colors look too saturated on your monitors? Saturating them a bit was part of my PP, but I'm using my iBook to edit on so I'm not sure how well it translates to everyone else. Some of my favorite nature pics have very saturated colors - some from HDR and others are just processed that way.

For the pictures, which are nice and show your creative side, I would try and show the kind of work you want to get hired to do. If thats covering travel kids sporting events then volunteer to take some shots free and post them up (with permission, of course). That's just an example, but the idea is to put up stuff your customer we see and say I want THAT for me. Family portaits at the beach; kid's soccer; mother's day potraits of the kids; senior portraits; HS sports and events (dnaces, graduation, etc). Maybe you want to get into the corporate thing. I rarely see a small business webbsite with decent, much less good, pictures (except for Altspace's clients!). Look at local business who have a web presence but crappy pics; offer to take new pics which they can use free, but where you keep limited rights to the picture to use for self promotion.

While we're on the subject of purpose rights, I recommend reading this blog by John Harrington, the guy that literal wrote the book on the business of photography.

Good luck

ACtually I'm starting to take photos of the dance studio events that I go to for lessons. I saw their site and immediately talked to the owner. So..in the next few weeks..I'll be covering events that they put on and are a part of. Actually opportunities have been rolling in non stop so I'm getting all this practice I need/want plus a bit of other benefits hehe. Thanks man!

Can you post a tutorial in making your own watermarks to embed in pictures? I think that'd be informative to everybody including me since I have to start watermarking my pictures.

PS: A cable release and a IR remote are 2 of the coolest things on this planet for a photographer haha. It's so handy. I just got both for my cam and I can't wait to do some astrophotography this summer.

You can see my hand there to the left of the steering wheel. I can set the timer and activate the remote function together or each individually. I generally don't use the delay because I want be able to achieve a faster frame rate, even if I have to see my hand holding the remote sometimes.

The IR remote works great but focusing can be troublesome. I suppose I could just set the camera to focus on the closest object in the frame, but I have not tried that...yet.

Definitely not over saturated. Whether they look the same as on your monitor, however, I can't say. I have heard that Mac monitors are a little bright and a little low contrast, but otherwise accurate color-wise. Calibration is the best way to be sure your output looks similar to the image on your screen.

BTW, nice pics...especially the second one.

Other benefits? I used to date a dancer...

Depending on the type of dance, I would consider solo shots not during a performance for dancers. You can better control the light and the composition when the dancer is on their own. Consider a remote flash set-up similar to what used by the Strobist.com user community. You can get an idea of what's possible by visiting their Flickr pool at http://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/pool/

Oh uhm how do I design a copywrite to put on my pics?

If you post your pics on Deviantart you can set up a copywrite with different levels of usage for the public

i kinda liked this one too.... although i changed positions b/c they were zooming by way to fast.
