Any photographers in here?

hey all,
I have a favor to ask. I am going to be taking some photos of some products for a clients website. Any pointers on how to shoot some good product shots on a white backdrop? I'm looking for things like studio setup...ie backdrop material, layout, lighting, etc...

Funky is right, for almost everything you are going to want bright, diffuse lighting. The best way to do that without 2,00 watts of halogen flood lighting is with on off-camera flash or studio strobe. Flashes are going to be easier to work with especially if the products are small. I would verify with the client what look they're going for. If they want a "Sharper Image this is what it looks like on your desk at work" image then you have a tougher job of balancing light. If they want a "Amazon.com everything on a white background" image then a shoot-through dome might be your best bet.

Example of a dome/tent: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/501360-REG/Westcott_300_DigiTent_30_.html

Off-camera flash might be a little beyond the reach of this one project, but if you're willing to make the investment in a couple of flashes (~$100/ea) a wireless trigger set (~$50) and the dome (~$60), then you'll have a portable kit that can go everywhere you do and set-up in minutes. You'll also be able to use the flashes for other stuff like executive portraits (with umbrellas and stands).

So, I encourage you to seriously consider buying some gear. As you can already see, clients, once they know they can trust you, want you to do other things for them. Having that ability and flexibility is a real plus.

Here's a product shot done by my friend.

Barely any shadows, 2 flashes, 2 umbrellas.

how big are the items?

Here's a sample shot I took awhile back on a used GReddy BOV

Alien Bee B800 strobe to the right (umbrella)
Canon 420EX to the left (Stofen diffuser)
Canon 580EX straight on (Stofen diffuser)
The backdrop is a piece of vinyl cloth bought from a cloth store.

I have since purchased a 430EX that I use to light the background to eliminate the shadows further.

thanks for the help all...and sorry for the late reply... i do not currently have any flashes but i plan on getting one shortly. the products are about the size of a cube of soda. most of the shots are going to be cut out of the background or just closeup shots of specific features of the product. I know i need to invest in some more equipment its just that this is not the best time of the year to do so.

I do think i will go and buy some foam core and some cloth for a backdrop. any suggestions on places to get some foam core?

that was my first impression actually. WTF is with the glowing ball?? Or is that just the light in the rear showing through a blue / green ball?

It was the wireless flash behind the ball. It's an exercise ball...so it's transluscent. Light shows through.

Here's an example of using an umbrella..

Here's a sample of specular highlight control on my brother's glasses. Notice you can see through the glasses and see his eyes and the reflections are not as harsh.

It looks better w/o the umbrella, as far as exposure and lighting.

It was was cool, especially since we have the same birthday.... ok, bonus points for having the same birthday, now it's Awesome!

Just got myself a Rebel XT yesterday. Coming from a Rebel 35mm that never left the preset settings. So, now that I've got my digi, I'm experimenting with all the creative settings. I'll be posting when I get some decent shots.

Way to go Taylor. I think you'll really like the instant feedback digital gives you. If you're fleshing out your Christmas list I would recommend a 430EX flash. If you learn how to use it well it will be one of the biggest tools in your bag. Good lighting can make a mediocre shot good and a good shot great. As you can see above, there are accessories which can further help you control the lighting. It really a broad skill set that you can never really master, so the sooner your start to integrate good light into your process, the sooner you'll get better.

Totally agree. I have 2 430EX's now :) And more wireless receivers :) A external flash unit is somehting you need in the bag next to the tripod. You can pick up a used 430 for around 200 bux nowadays.

I think I posted this already but ..... http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/

And read the strobist articles and do the assignments...they're fun.
