anti rust option

I live in Montreal where winters can be harsh, snow and salt. Is the anti-rust option from Mazda worth it?

They offer a 10 years warranty?

Well, the car has been sprayed with an underbody rust protection coating before leaving the factory.

What else is the dealership going to do to it?

Usually, down here in the States where the winters isn't so harsh, the anti-rust options sold by the dealership are BS and extra profit for them.

But I don't know what they sell in up there in Montreal...

its an uncoat spray which turns hard. Protecting the bottom where it gets the most salt from the roads.

I agree, it gets spayed from the factory, it is good profit for the dealers.

Interesting...

I would worry about mositure being trapped between the coating and the unibody. That will cause rusting...

Good point, however i had it done to my honda civic when i got it in 1999, has no rust but then again so do other honda's that did not have it done?

In Montreal, many people have it done after market, usally every year which cost about 60 to 70 $, it does work.

Mazda is charging 399 with a warranty of 10 years . 399/10 makes it 39.90 year.

Just make sure you get the car washed after driving through some storms. that would help out w/rust prevention. Rust proofing is good for older cars. New cars can go w/o, it's already coated before leaving the factory.

IMO, it's a waste of money. Most cars only start rusting after 10 years anyway.

No kidding! My Mazda dealer wanted $650 for rust proofing and $700 for "electronic" rust proofing. I nearly fell off my chair when they said that!

My USA Mazda 5 is not factory undercoated. It has spotty sound deadening and that is it. Look under the wheel wells in the rear shows sound deadening/undercoating spray on the right and left side of the shocks and exposed gray paint. Same thing with going under the car no undercoating, just spotty sound deadening. Totally exposed gray painted bumper bulkheads. Major rusting points all over my 5. Who knows how much exposed crappy painted metal is exposed under the plastic aerodynamic sheets that they bolt under the floor pan?

My Protege5 started rusting after 4 years on the fenders and the edges of the hood. When I ordered my 6, we talked the dealer down to $225 from $500 to have the factory rustproofing done. WE had gone with Krown on the P5 but it made such a mess and seeped out for over a year, so we didn't want to deal with that mess again.

If you can talk them down, it's worth it. Canadian road crews use a ton of salt.

I'll be picking up my Mazda5 GS this week. I was very happy with the price using the info from CarCost Canada, believing they will give me a fair price for other extra items too. I was wrong, I was charged 699 for the 10 year rust proofing and they are trying to get me to buy the extended warranty before I pick up the car. I live in Ottawa, usually keep my car for ten years, the 7 yr/160,000km MAP is $1924. I was thinking of buying it, but now I am not so sure as I do not trust them to give me a fair price anymore. Can I bargain it down since they have made a $300 profit from the rust proofing? By the way, the warrantydirect.ca quoted me for the same extended warranty (SecureCare) for 1928, no saving there.

I've never gotten it on any car I've owned. The 1989 volvo wagon we are currently driving to my knowledge has never been rust proofed and the only rust related thing I've had to contend with is replacing a muffler pipe.

We're picking up our GS this week too (also in ottawa), and I used the car cost canada quote as well; saved me a bit. Anyway, I normally skip the extended warranty, but its always a roll of the dice with any car. Case in point is our last vehicle, a 2002 highlander which died (engine blew) after 4.5 years. I was out of luck as the warranty had expired due to the fact that I was just over 100K. Based on that brutal experience, I swallowed my pride and got the 6 year / 160,000 extended option with the 5.

The best thing you can do is try to keep it clean. That includes getting in the door jambs and under the doors when they are open to clean them. keep salt & sand out of such friction areas from building. There is no bulletproof way. Being proactive after exposure after storms even if it gets dirty a mile down the road... The other important areas is wheelwells and any other areas where sheetmetal is pinch welded. Many areas like hood, wells, door edges, etc. are because the sheetmetal is welded shut with no drainage points. Water and salt get in and can't drain out. Thus, Rust grows in those areas.

Just spraying the salt off as often as possible will be enough. I daily drove my Miata for 16 years in Minnesota, and we use just as much salt as anywhere north of here. It took until maybe 2 years ago for rust to show up because I hosed it off all the time. Paying that much for some dealership monkey to squirt tar all over the car is rediculous, just go to the auto parts store, buy a couple cans of "Spray ON Truck Bedliner" for less than $20 and do it yourself.

well it depend on city.. toronto and quebec use the most salt in canada area.. edmonton/calgary area is nice. rich city.. they use sand... !!!! so toronto quebec area should get your car rust proof

Install muflaps . Without mudflaps, sand and salt with snow will be whisked, splattered under the side skirt.. who knows what lies up thess sides of the undercarriage.. maybe brake lines? fuel lines?
