Annoying noise

I just Checked the front struts... SAME PROBLEM.. Everyone, Check your bolts... I put washers on both struts rigth under the nut.. NO noise.. I think its finally fixed... The inside of the washer meansures Just over 1/2in... Like 2 small lines over 1/2 in.. (sorry I dont know what the correct measurement is.. But I would def check your front struts as well..Good luck

great job joe, thanks a lot for the info...
I'm surprised this problem didn't come up earlier, seeing as many P5s have been lowered....

Anyhow, thanks again to Joe and I hope this works for me...

This wasn't the problem for me. I tried it last night. I used some big fat lock washers and tightened then all up w/ a torque wrench. But the first bump I went over, the noise was still there. I am glad to hear the Joe's went went away, but it wasn't the fix to mine... Arghh...

Going to try tonight but i dont remember there being any play in that location...might as well double check though.

My washer was pretty thick. Probably about double the thickness of the ones in your pic. Once installed, the top of the nut is just about even with the top of the bolt. The washer definately cleared any non-threaded area on the bolt. I think that my noise is underneath the car. I still think that it is probably rattling around inside of the top spring retainer...

Ok, I found the problem on my car. Hopefully Joe's solution will fix the problem that you guys are having, but it won't mine. Anyhow, I got off of work early today and there was still some light out, so I propped it up and pulled the R/R wheel. All of the bolts are tight so I grabbed the spring and tried to shake it around. Somebody earlier said that they could make their spring rattle just by shaking it, but not mine. So I got a flashlight and looked up near the top of the spring. The spring is making contact with the big black spring retainer. The rubber grommet thing that should absorb that type of noise is twisted up. You know how a tube sock can sometimes be all twisted and misaligned? Well that is how the rubber grommet is. It is seated correctly about half way around, but the rest is just all bunched up and doing nothing. I think that if I put some compressors in there I can squeeze it down enough to fix it without taking out the whole assembly. But if not, I am going to have to do the whole R/R again. Either way, I am pleased that I found my noise. Maybe you folks that aren't able to fix the problen using Joe's solution should double check that grommet. I will post pics when I am fixing it, but it probably won't be until next weekend, because I am out of town this weekend.

this weekend when i put on my headers ill probably try to **** with that also, seeing that the place i take my car to on post has a full lift bay, with EVERY tool you would need to take apart or work on any part of any car...and its only 4 bucks an hour

Jesus garretts77...that is the cleanest wheel well I have ever seen!!!...damn Cali boys! Lol!
C'mon up here to great white north, I'll show you how to get your car good and dirty!

That looks like your problem...I still need to try the washer trick, I have coilovers so I think my problem might be in there...
Either way, lets keep this thread going and see how many different fixes people come up with..

Yeah, I bought the car in May, and it doesn't rain a whole lot here...
I will let you guys know the outcome once i can get in there with some daylight.
Garrett

Hey BLACKp5CA...

What kind of coilovers do you have?? I have the ground controls and had nothing but problems with them.. they make so much noise in the front thats its sooo embarrasing that i wont drive my car anymore until i can get in there to fix it. I know what the problem is...its just the adjuster banging against the strut/spring.. the "o" rings GC provides is crap.. and they broke. the problem is finding a fix that would work.

Anways.. back to the other subject... I too have that same noise in the back as well. When i went to the import shop who installed my GC's.. i made them take me back to the bay so i could see what they were doing.. If i remember correctly, there is a metal plate that sits above the bump stop..( i dont know what it is called) at the top of the spring... we came to the conclusion that it was this that is banging around in there...I also had Eibachs and it was doin the same thing...

And for the person who said to check the jack in the trunk and all.. good try... I looked in there too.. not the problem.. i took every single thing that i had in my car out.. everything from the jack to the spare change!! and that wasnt the problem. Mine isnt that bad really.. only when i go over a bump.. my problem lies in the front of my car... so if anyone can thing of a fix to keep the adjuster in place.. i would love you forever!!!]

I'm taking my struts/springs apart this weekend to try and fix my front problems... so i'll try some of your guys fixes and see if it helps...trust me.. if you heard what i have to hear everyday you would never ever complain about the noise in the back!!! BET your life!!

I fixed mine! No more noise... I lifted the car, compressed the spring, and shifted the rubber piece around until it fit correctly in the retainer. uncompressed, replaced the wheel, and lowered. Presto... At least for now. I am driving about 1200 miles this weekend. We'll see how she holds up. But this morning on the way to work, it was ghostly silent. I didn't realize how used to that sound I had become. Now that it's gone, I almost miss it... =)

Fixed my problem..
Sorry to not get back to you sooner Babygirl...
My problem was within the coilovers slapping around while they were unloaded (going over bumps etc.)
My Fix...
On the top of the top plate for the coilovers I added four small strips of sticky foam tape in a square shape around the perimeter, the top plate rests in the top of the srtut where only a small section of rubber is present and the outer edge of the coilover top plate can touch the metal top of the upper strut plate.
Next I took some thin rubber tubing, I used heat shrink. Slid that over the thin part of the strut to prevent the metal top plate from hitting the metal rod (or whatever it's called)
I'm sure I made this much more confusing than it sounds but it worked...I forgot how nice and quiet it was supposed to be back there.

On a side note...didnt need any washers on the top of the strut assembly, it was snug.
