An exaust Question?

If I buy an aftermarket cat back system, should i keep the msp muffler, or use the one that comes with the system?

I was thinking about instead of getting a cat back just get an after market high flow cat and run it with larger pipe back to the stock muffler

I'm not really sure either but the stock muffler is pretty good. I guess. Just needs a better flowing cat and larger pipe. Difference is $$$. Unless i'm completly wrong, which i could be.

An engine is a BIG air pump, thats all. Takes air in combusts it and forces the air out. Now bigger exhaust piping and higher flow cat and muffler gives the car the ability to move the exhaust gasses out faster. So lf your going forced induction, i would definitly recommend going to a 2.5 in pipe-mandrell bent not crush bend(slows the flow).

Hopes that helps =P

back preasure is good but for the most part bigger is better. hence the reason HKS makes a 4" exhaust. not for our cars of course

backpressure is only good on NA, a turbo motor would prefer to run without an exhaust

why not go 3 Inch? NA hondas run 2.5. Why is everyone wanting 2.5 for a turbo car. Go 3' and you wont have to worry bout it later down the road if you start upgrading.

a bit Off Topic, but how much was that Greddy Boost Gauge? and does it match the red dash lighting? and how did you mount it?

also, why the hell would u buy a catback system if you dont want to use the muffler off it. seriously, the muffler is the expensive part... like 70% of the price. All you need is to have a shop bend up some stainless steel pipes and weld on the stock muffler if u want

find or make a friend who works at a shop and you don't have to worry about it. makes it easier to get away with things like having a flame throwing 3" straight pipe coming off a turbo rotary:D

I paid $180 Hook up (Alamo Autosports)
I have it mounted to my A-Pillar with an Autometer 2 5/8 gauge cup ($15) (USA Motorsports)
Nope I have the whiteface one it lights up green and red.
Get the silverface one it lights up orange and red. Matches the dashlights and gauges perfect. The Silverones only come in 60mm.

Even a turbo car can have too big of an exhaust. This was a huge debate in the GTI 1.8T forums about two years ago. One of the premiere VW tuners found that a 2.5" system was actually more efficient than 3" system because the key is gas velocity, and the 3" system allowed the exhaust gases to cool too much, and then slow down. If you are putting tons and tons of boost through an engine, then bigger is always better. But the GTI 1.8T and our MSP's are relatively lightly boosted from the factory, so bigger is not necessarily better in our case.

1.8t's run 9 PSI stock. APR chip rasies it to 1 Bar. I think that would call for 3' exhaust. Now thats a VW not a MSP. Those are two totally different motors. Like comparing apples and oranges (hehe). Talk to all the DSM guys. Also we have a 2L not 1.8.

It was APR's own exhaust that I was speaking of in my earlier post. (it also happened to be one of the highest performing exhausts available for the 1.8T, but it was also the most expensive, so cost was not much of a factor in their design) So obviously 3" was a bit of overkill since APR has a reputation for some of the most comprehensive engine research for aftermarket VW mods. So yes, our engines are slightly larger, but they are also pushing less boost, so I think 2.5" would probably be fine, unless you are planning to strap a larger turbo onto your poor block. I guess my point remains that bigger is not always better.
