An AWD MazdaSpeed?

a buddy of mine has a Skoda Octavia vRS in Denmark.........now that's a fun car.
he's got the whole rally setup on it. awesome car.

Hey if you're gonna be converting your cars drivetrain to a sport20's, are you planning on doing some rally x with it? If so, you'd better look into totally revamping your "oh so perfect road and track suspension." A suspension as stiff as the MSP's on a rally car is asking for trouble. You would do exponentially more damage to your car on such a stiff suspension if you were running a rally course. Hence the reason for the Subie's somewhat soft suspension. Many people have criticized it for that, but the reason for it is dirt tracks don't take well to stiffer suspensions...just my $.02

AWD is nice for some applications. Depends on how you want to race. On a road course, you would want AWD. As for on a drag strip or a straight road. It doesn't matter.

None of the cars you listed were or are available in America in their true WRC form. (Don't flame me about the Celica GT4 either)

Say the MSP came with AWD and a larger turbo, it would put it in the class with the Evo and the WRX, it would be nice to see it up there i think.

just a thought, comments?

The MSP would need alot of R&D before it would be able to catch up to the likes of the EVO or STI. They have been racing these cars for years and all the trial and error???

No offence ...What do you mean it dosn't matter.

Here's a situation for you...

Light goes green and you hammer the gas, Revs come up, Boost comes up, and you smoke your tires while sitting in more or less the same place.

On a stock P5 or whatever it might not make a smick. But on a 200+ Hp Grocery Getter the "Double The Traction" effect is sure missed.

his point was that there is less power loss to the drive train

why dont you think they use AWD drag cars anymore? the same time they were using those they thought spinning the wheels was the fastest way to get off the line

I'de like you to find me an AWD car that runs 5 seconds in the 1/4 mile

mmm can you say Slicks? There are a number of reasons they don't use AWD in 1/4 cars, the biggest reason is the class wont allow it. Aside from the fact that you do NOT want traction on your front tires, thats what puts you into the wall (hence fatties in the back and skinnies up front).

I can find you an AWD GSX that runs 8's and is driven on the street.... http://www.shepracing.com/

Id like you to show me a car that runs 5 seconds in the 1/4 that can run on the street. Afterall you could run a rally car on the street no problem...

You guys are listing all these other AWD turbo cars but forget about the GTX... Id take that over ANY Evo VIII or STI, Im a tight wad though, I can't justify spending that much money on something like that. Especially when a GTX can do just about the samething better and more cost effiecent.

I understand his point but he was talking in the context of this fourm, IE. Sport Compact cars, not top fuel land missiles. Spining is great but the physics behind static and kinetic friction have been around for ever. More traction is better. Yes, loss to internals with friction is a negative, weight is as well. The discussion was simply on the topic of AWD performance. The original post was simply to state that Traction = Launch.

when i listed those cars i was makin the point that there are tons of awd turbo cars our there.....U.S just aint ready for them all......but awd isnt the superior drivetrain anyway.......you hardly see it used in professional racing and it it is used, most time its at club style events.....

also what drag sanctions dont allow awd? i know extreme motorsports still campain their talon along with shepard and others....alot of the old awd cars (osofast, etc) went rwd cus they couldnt get the drivetrain to handle repeated abuse of the drag lauchs, there were rebuildin it after everyrace basically......bottom line is that everyone has their specific pros and cons.......i would luv a nice evo3 or 4 rs with about 400whp and f/r cusco lsd's but i would take a 400whp rx7/s15 also......:)

I do know one thing, we're never going to find out, because they aren't making any more proteges!

As for the Mazda 3, who knows- there probably will be a Mazdaspeed version eventually and it'll probably make more power than what we have now. From what I've seen of the new car, it appears to be more robust and able to handle a lot more juice.

My point stands, the Sport20 will wreck the MSP as we know it.. BUT, the MSP Sport20 will show fourth it's healing light and guide us to a new path of peace and understanding..

As soon as my friend gets back.. And finds a wrecked one.. And I get money.. And I get time to do it.. And I figure out all the bugs.. And my son continues the project cause I will die of old age... BUT YEAH!!

You people are lost. AWD is not the end all tell all of road racing. RWD is much better suited for the application. Geez, you all should have bought a WRX.

I'm a'gonna bolt the MSP body on an ol' K5 Blazer 4WD frame and drivetrain, figger the 350 cubic inch 'plant oughta get 300hp with the Rochester 4-barrel and an Edelbrock... throw some Cepek Monster Mudders on that bad beast, drop it in low-lock and we'd run RINGS around the Evo and STi if the mudbog was worth anything! BRING IT ON! :D :D :D

(different horses for different courses... AWD MSP would be cool, though)

Don't get the whole FWD vs AWD vs RWD thing. There is not a clear cut victor there, so stop. Sorry that I thought it would be neat to ask my friend if he could get a Sport20 drive train some time. SORRY I BROUGH IT UP, SHEESH.

lol
everytime an "AWD MSP" thread starts up, it ends up the same way :D

this is what.....like 5th time?

i would love to make my P5 an AWD car. i don't care bout all the performance crap because everybody says different things, like this one is better for this and that one sucks for that, blablablaa

Before throwing s*** at the guy for wanting to do something cool with his car, did any of you ask him actually why he wants to do it ? I didn't see Droozor or pluto mention they wanted to own everybody in the 1/4 or do rally with their cars. So why insisting on the "fact" it doesn't launch good (i don't know) or that the suspension sucks for rallying ? I would LOVE to have AWD and you know why ? I love driving in the snow and AWD would make it soooo much better. And everytime someone says he wants to convert his car to AWD or dreams of reaching 300whp, there's ALWAYS someone saying "you shouild've bought a WRX" or STi or EVO or whatever car you can think of that has that power, while the guy wants to take the car he loves and bring it there. To me, an EVO aint nothing more than a regular Lancer that was modified. Actually, i think buying an EVO or STi is just taking the easy way out. Although i love those cars, i would admire more someone who would take a regular car and build it to compete against those 2 than buying it already done. Kinda like my friend who makes fun of me cause he beats my ass all the time with his M3 ... it just shows he has more money than i do.

Anyway, i'd love to see (and own) an AWD protege because of snow driving and stuff, and also because my car would be unique ... isn't that what most people are trying to do anyway?

Oh, and it's been bugging me kids.. The Sport20 is 4WD.

AWD =! 4WD

Actually 4WD is different because its not operating all the time. AWD is constant, or has no means to be engaged On or Off by the driver.
