Am I the only one?

I've seen them for around 25k for the "base" model with the rotary that makes even LESS power than 238. And for 25k, that drops the RX-8 in a competitive class yet again....against the RSX-S (23k loaded), WRX and SRT-4 (less than 20k loaded with factory incentives...) all of which I'd rather have.
there is only 2 motors the manual trans and the auto one, a rsx-s is not even in the same ballpark as a rx8 and a srt-4 is just plain ugly and based off a neon

The Srt-4 has a modded chassis. It is not the same chassis as a neon, it has so much more bracing. How is the RSX-S not in the same ballpark? It's faster.

have you guys ever driven one? the car is a 4 door 4 seater (and i fit in the back @ 5'11" and 200lbs) with a few mods like tires , intake and exhaust it turns it into a different car. It would smoke a WRX on a windy road and it does'nt have a weak ass first gear. If you want to just go even faster get a FD or FC, if you want a cool 4 door with a rotary it is the way to go. We are getting 317hp on the engine dyno out of a old n/a 13b we are hoping for around 350hp and up (engine dynoed) with the new 13b. 350 all motor HP out of a 1.3l motor is pretty damm crazy
I like your perspective on this. I don't think anyone thinks about the fact that this is such a small motor making this kind of hp.
That's 183 bhp for the 6 port Renesis.
At those numbers, your Proteges "should" be making 366bhp. Not bad, but a lot to ask for from an n/a boinger whose manufacturer has a particular budget (read $60k honda builders need not apply) and not to mention reliability to worry about.
Some more hp comparisons, if these cars made the hp that the 6 port Renesis makes (n/a per n/a, of course):
I WISH my miata made 329 n/a hp
5.0 Mustang owners would enjoy 915 stock hp
3 enthusiasts would have something to brag about with 420hp
New Viper owners would just about hit Mach 1 with 1,518 hp! :D

So, in summation (stfu)

That thinks the RX8 SUCKS?

- its ugly (without full bodykit)
- hate the hammerheard looking front end
- stubby rear end
- saturn style doors
- no turbo
- 238hp engine for almost 30k

the car doesnt impress me at all. i guess a lot of peopl ehere love it because they love mazdas. to me thats like political party affiliations. i am not affiliated because if i like a democrat im not going to vote rep just because thats the ticket im on.

anyways, sorry for the rant, just curious if i was the only one out there. IMO, if i had 30+k to blow (dont give me this after rebates etc, because all cars have that, im talking base price), it sure as s*** wouldnt be on that underpowered, small, shark looking thing. hell, IIRC the evo isnt much more if at all (when you get base model), correct?

**** you, i stated my opinion of the car. its ugly and overpriced. period. id take a 2nd or 3rd gen but never this bulls***.

seriously, im not flaming here, but you started this thread bitching about the car. okay, point taken. defenders come in to defend the car, thier point also taken. at the end of the day, you dont drive an rx8, and the supporters probably mouldnt mind having one. so who cares...honestly, who the **** cares you dont like the rx8. great. whoop-T-doo. This is the only good thread to post in at 1 am.

Here's my take:

-Over pirced? Not really. You actually get a lot of car for the money. Plus the fact that it's rear wheel drive makes it even more atractive of a buy. Let's remember that the FD3S, even with the twin turbos, only had 255hp and was priced way over $30K.

-"Scuicide" doors and tail lights = FUGLY

-The car itself looks good, especially with the factory "apprearance" package.

-Would I buy one? Sure :) Most dealers are offering them for wayyyyyyyyyy below invoice which makes it even more of a bargain. For instance, the 6 spd manual model with the factory "apperance" pakcage and the "sport" package stickers for just under $30,000. Most dealers are between $4-$6K discounts off of MSRP. Hence, for $26,000 you get a car with:

Factory HID's
18" Wheels/tires
Limited Slip Differential
Dynamic Stability Control
6 spd manual
238hp is not that bad :)
Rear Wheel Drive...........

Just these attributes make it a pretty good bargain :) Just my .02 cents :)

The styling has grown on me a ALOT, but there is something about the look of the 'C' Pillar. And it "seems" like Mazda knows it too, based on the angles that they tend to use in photos. Still, it doesn't have the "cookie-cutter" look and has a nice aggressive stance. And, for the $$, you get some nice stuff.
As far as performance, I yanked a salesman and once took one for a short drive. Nice balance and overall feel. Compared to my FD, it was quiet and comfortable and sometimes I could really use the seating and space. But you didn't "wear" the car like you do the FD which, even aged as it is, handles better. And it was definitely underpowered. I recently read an article about the work PETTIT RACING was doing with the 8. Basically they've come to the conclusion that even with some forced induction, the Renesis isn't going to produce a lot more in it's current form. 3-rotor maybe?

Just my .02.

The one I test drove today was an 04 with just the sport pkg. If I leased it the dealer wanted 23k... Not bad, will have to think on it.

Well I traded my MSP for one and have no regrets. Pettit gave a rebuttal on that whole article in Road and Track by the way saying that they basically improperly tuned it before the tests and told them that, but R&T printed what they wanted to.

Greddy has a 302 whp turbo kit that was on display at SEMA, and another company (speedforce racing?) had one that was 350.

I got mine for 27,000 with the sport package. 18" wheels, LSD, sport suspension, DSC, TCS, RWD, aluminum hood, 6 speed, with a carbon driveshaft. My payment went up about 80 bucks a month. I average 20-22 mpg, and I recently went on a run through local Red Rock Canyon with an S2K driver I know, and he was but a spec in my rear view. Granted, I'm a better driver, we traded cars and he noted how confident he felt in the 8.

I also drove the canyon road with several MSP's and they held their own, but still were no competition for the 8.

I'm not a drag racer. I'm not a stop light warrior. I am someone who never really considered an RX-8 until I drove one myself. I'd be willing to bet that 99% of the people knocking the car have never driven it. I've test driven EVO's, WRX's, STi's, RSX-S, Celica GT-S, 350Z, S2K, and owned an MSP. The only car that made me feel as if it was an extension of my body was this one. And I was instantly converted from being a 350Z fan to an 8 fan, and I bought the thing that day.

IMHO the 8 is the only car in its class and price range to offer good looks (subjective), razor sharp handling and nimbleness, amazing interior, practicality, decent performance, and all at a price considerably less than it's competitors. S2K sits pretty at $32K, 350Z 29-30 for a stripped model, EVO 32K, STi 32K, etc etc etc. The only other car I think would match well is the EVO, but I don't like the ricey look and the fact that it's a 30K+ economy car chassis built up. To me it's the 30K dollar SRT-4. Plus I don't trust Mitsubishi, and they wouldn't give the car to me for the great price I got my 8 for.

The difference I paid between my car and those is the same difference between a civic lx and an MSP. About 5-6 grand. Remember that.
