Alternative to FMIC

For people like myself, that aren't really interested in doing major mods to our car. Has anyone ever thought of a way to increase the efficiency of a IC in the stock location?

I know dr.sound has that prototype I/C which would be a perfect replacement, be how about mods to increase the amount of air that actually hits the IC. I know there are a bunch of brackets for the AC and rad. Has anyone tried this?

I'm sure people will say get a IC sprayer, and thats a great bonus.

you could always get a wrx tmic and make it work thatd be better, u could get it for like 50 buckls.

I think an intercooler sprayer would be the way to max out the performance of the intercooler in its stock location.

I'm still thinking about how to rig one up. I want to do something that's nice- not half-assed.

I was looking in a Summit Racing catalog.....They have some Cry02 sprayer or something like that.....That could work for a sprayer, correct?

if you were going to get a top mount intercooler you would need to fabricate a hood for it most likely.

yeah with a hood scoop? but i was thinking of front mounting it...

hood scoop or maybe those velocity hoods in CF :D ...that would be nice

hood scoops = gay IMO

hahhaa that's funny put a top mount intercooler on a protege. umm, when they mentioned top mount intercooler, they meant to replace the stock one by putting it in the front and rigging it up from there. our cars don't have flat-4 boxer engines.

it can be done if you wanted...also wrx's arent the only cars with a TMIC

I have a sprayer and I don't think it's half assed at all. I have a good spray nozzel, good water pressure, big reservor, Nice small hidden button. Very reliable.

it could be done but it would be pointless. there's no room in the protege's engine compartment to accomadate it. yes i knoe wrx's aren't the only one's w/ tmic i.e. the 2nd gen rx-7. but the point was to take the TMIC and just mount it up front since all the stock pipes of the car go there anyway.

Forget the top mount idea for real. No affense but it kinda would take the same amount of effort and custom piping as a FMIC.

I was kinda hinting at changing the front bumper with one that shows the stock IC better and lets air actually hit it dead on.

I've been contemplating something along these lines since I bought the car... but, there's a lot of major obstruction between the IC and fresh air.

My first thought was to make a spring-loaded hinged door that opened in front of the IC to let more air to it... but, then realized there's actual bumper there! (smacks head) So, that's out for the most part.

My second thought was to make some kind of scoop/diverter type thing to redirect air from the 'mouth'.... up to the IC. I get the feeling it'd be kind of a band-aid approach and not particularly effective, though.

The latest idea is to combine the first 2 ideas.... 1st, Remove the plastic that makes the indention for the driver's side foglight and divert air from there to the IC... then do the diverter from the mouth to the IC. I think if one diverter moved air over the top half of the IC and the second diverter moved air over the bottom half, it might be effective at keeping temps a little cooler.

I've been thinking about a peltier assisted intercooler... I wonder if its even possible. you'd have to keep the peltiers cool with some good heatsinks, but I think a couple 120mm pelts would rock it.

I FMIC with a new bumper cover (designed to match) would be a nice combo- a nice, big open front with maybe some mesh to cover the IC. Basically, a bigger hole than what we have now.

Was looking up that C02 intercooler sprayer- would run about $270 complete. Hmmmmmmmmmm......

Where do you get one of those bottles filled up?

you shoud be able to fill it up at any paintball store, and you can also look in to Alcohol/Water Injection
