2012 mazda 3
Hey there,
I was rear ended in my mazda 3 yesterday. It was a hard hit and the car that hit me was totalled. My car appeared to take the impact well and has damage to mainly the bumper and hatch. The police told me that I could drive home after. Once I got in the car, I noticed that the red airbag light on the dash keeps flashing red and when looking closely I noticed new lines on the passenger dash where it looks like the airbag could or should come out. I got the car towed to the shop because I was scared the airbags may deploy and they said they won't know what's wrong for a couple days. Just looking for some info, if anyone has seen this before or knows what it may be from. I had a passenger who hit his head pretty hard off the dashboard during the accident if that makes a difference. Thank you !

The light just means that there is a fault or open circuit in the SRS system. This happens in most high speed accident, even if no airbags deployed. It can be because the seat belt tensioners deployed (which permanently makes the seat belts shorter by a few inches so you don't go flying into the steering wheel/windshield.

In BMW's, the headrest would also deploy in rear collisions when your body was flung forward so that you wouldn't get as much whiplash as the head rest would go closer to your head by a few inches.

You will have to take it to a Mazda dealership and have them take a look at the car.
