Adding Manual Transmission Fluid

I got the 10mm bolt that holds the speedo cable off and disconnected the cable. The problem is I cannot get the gear out to add the fluid. Is it OK if I reconnect the cable and pull on it? There is no room to pry it off as the Hayes manual recommends.

It is a 1990 Protege

Any other ideas?

its kinda hard but we used a pair of plier and twisted it left and right to work them loose, break up the area. and eventually it will work its way out1
