Add Sub to stock setup?

Hello All,

I was wondering if anybody knows if there is an output, or if the stock HU is capable of adding a sub. I really don't want to swap out the stock unit, but want to add a little boom-boom in the trunk. I realize that I will need an amp and what-not. Just wondering if it is at all possible.

Thanks in advance!

the hu does not have outputs, you have to use an rca converter tapped in to your speaker wires and run a remote wire from your fuse area for your amp. i have an 04 m3 hatch, i tapped in to my rear door speaker wires before they go in the door, i don't remember what color they are but it is real easy to take the door cover off to see, but on mine they reversed the wire color after going in the door to the speaker. i ran the speaker wire to the back and connected the rca conv. there. and the rest is easy.

Depending on the amp you choose, you may or may not need a LOC (line-out-converter). Most amps have speaker-level inputs so the LOC is not needed. If you pick an amp that doesn't have this, you can get a LOC from www.davidnavone.com for a decent price. LOC or no LOC, you should be able to connect an amplifier to the factory speaker-level outputs so you don't have to upgrade the head unit.

I highly recommend posting what you are about to buy here on this forum. If there are any problems with the equipment you choose we will point it out.

My recommendation to people entering the aftermarket car audio world is to keep in mind that more bass doesn't always make a better system. The stock head unit only puts out about 10-15w per channel so even a 200w powered subwoofer is enough to drown them out.

For a low-power entry level system, I suggest purchasing a 4-channel amplifier, a single 8" or 10" subwoofer and box, and a set of front speakers. You can power the front speakers off the front channels of the amp and power the subwoofer off the rear channels of the amp by bridging them. This will create a well balanced system that will last you a long time. A system like this would cost you between $500-1500 depending on what equipment you choose and how much work you perform yourself.

i have an 04 m3 hatch, i changed the front door to 6" kicker components, rear doors to 6x8 infinity kappas, no amp on either, i have two 12" RF p3's & a t1000.1bd amp i had to use a loc tapped in to the rear doors... it sounds better useing the loc instead of the high lvel inputs.

Once I get a good picture of what I want, and see my options, I will throw it on here. Thanks for the hand! (cheers)
