A few questions from a CX-5 noob

2016.5 CX-5 Grand Touring
I just got my 2016.5 CX-5 Grand Touring with tech package a week ago and so far I'm loving it. However, I do have a few questions that I'm sure you guys could help me with.

1. Do the side mirrors fold? The owners manual says that they do and the design of them looks like they would but when I try, they don't budge at all. I feel like I'm going to break them.

2. Does anyone else use a USB drive to store and play their music through the infotainment system? I can play music from it with no problem but I've noticed several odd things:

- It sometimes doesn't remember what track I was on when starting the car. Sometimes it picks up where it left off, sometimes it restarts with the first track alphabetically.

- The "shuffle" feature isn't random at all. If I enable shuffle, it plays the exact same tracks in the exact same order every single time.

- Voice commands don't seem to work. I press the voice button and it tells me to give it a command. I tell it to play an artist, it says something like "reading USB" and then tells me to give it a command again. It does this infinitely.

Has anyone else experienced these issues? Does anyone know how to remedy them?

Thanks so much!

Interesting note about the shuffle. That used to happen in my old 2013 and it was annoying af. Same with the track starting at 1. It was fixed with an updated by module free of charge. I'm surprised that is affecting a 2016.5

Hmmm, that is strange. Maybe I'll ask if there's any updates. Certainly can't hurt. Thanks!

My mirrors fold. Check the firmware version then check the latest available version and if you're not current update it. It may fix the shuffle problems.
As far as voice, it's a great gimmick but not real practical.

Do you have to do anything special to make them fold or you just push them?

My OS version is 59.00.441 and my music database version is 00.07.000. I believe these are the most recent for both but please correct me if I'm wrong.

The funny thing about the voice feature is that it worked amazingly well in my 2011 Mustang (Fords Microsoft Sync system). That system was 6 and a half years older than this one... there's no reason Mazda can't make this fully functional.

Standing outside.... hand on outermost part... push in so mirror area is flush with drivers door glass. Just push them in.. they will be fine. They might even articulate mirror side out but have never tried or needed that.

The mirrors will fold, just follow Kedis instructions. With regards to shuffle, I had the same issues, but it turned out my mp3 did not have the correct info, ie the artist data was blank, or music type was blank for each mp3 file, there is a way to add that info and embed that into the mp3 file but I forgot now, do a Google search it's relatively easy, I had a bunch of mp3 files that had unknown artist or unknown music by default. In the cx5 I think there are different sorts categories like artist, music, I'm thinking you had selected one of those categories but your music files didn't have the embedded data so when you wanted shuffle it kept repeating the same song.

I had a bunch of mp3 that I pulled off YouTube that were missing the embedded data, but songs I bought off Amazon or Apple have all the info embedded already.

Hopes this helps.

I traded in a 2009 Fusion (first year of Sync) for a CX5 a month ago and the voice and audio functions of the Fusion worked perfectly. The 2014 CX5 is decent at best, but manageable. Still shake my head that the 7 year old Fusion system is miles better than even the 2016 Mazda.

I pulled into a car wash too close to one side, and had to roll down my window and pull in my side mirror - no problem. Just grabbed the outer corner and pulled inward. (Sorry if you're asking about automatic folding mirrors; mine doesn't have that.)

I use a USB stick with close to 1,000 songs on it. I've never tried the Shuffle feature, but I have used voice to call for a certain artist, and was impressed with how quickly it accessed all the tunes associated with that artist. The only time I've noticed it not picking up where I left off was when I had changed to a different audio source - e.g. AM, FM, or Pandora - and then returned to USB later. In those situations I think you start from the beginning.

FYI I have a 2016 Touring, but it's an older OS driving the infotainment. I asked to have it upgraded at my last oil change, but you have to have a problem with your system (they told me) to do the update. Afterward the service manager whispered to me that next time I should say the audio had been cutting in and out; then they would do the upgrade.

I don't use USB sticks I use Bluetooth from my phone and it shuffles properly. That said I think some sticks (name brands) process a bit faster than others.

Thanks for all the info everyone.

As for the mirrors, I got them to fold fairly easily. I think I was just pushing too much towards the center but once I pushed on the outer edge, they folded. I feel dumb :P

My USB stick is a Samsung 128GB USB 3.0 stick and it has probably 6,000-8,000 songs on it. It's very odd that I have the newest OS and I'm still having these issues. Maybe I'll try it with a different stick just in case.

Question for CX-5inJCTN - What exactly do you say to play an artist? Do you say "Play artist Metallica" or just "Play Metallica" or something else?

Try a smaller stick. That's pretty big for ye olde FAT32.

I don't know about the Mazda system, since I won't have my new CX-5 till next week. But in VW's system (which uses a SD card) if you don't place at least one song in the root directory the shuffle option doesn't work as expected.

Try putting one song in the root directory and see what happens.

Then you should of bought another fusion if that's what matters to you.

I knew the mirrors weren't automatic. I was just a spaz and had trouble doing it manually... I felt like I was going to break them so I was nervous.

I tried a 32GB USB stick and I put 1 track in the root directory. Lo and behold, the voice command worked and shuffle was actually random. Only problem is that the 32GB USB stick has a bright blinking LED which is terribly distracting so I'll have to invest in one without that.

Again, thanks everyone for all the help! You guys have been great.

It's obviously not a huge issue for either of us but it does matter to us and it should matter to you. Those sorts of basic audio functions come standard on nearly every car these days, new vehicles should never have inferior tech when compared to a 6-7 year old vehicle.

I'm loving the car but let's face it, there's always room for improvement.

Agreed. At no point did I say I would like to give back my CX5 due to infotainment bugs (as many here have internet-threatened to do in other threads). But that does not take away from the fact that a car purchased as recently as 2015 has a substantially less-functional feature set compared to a 9 year old car when it comes to bluetooth/USB and voice integration. Not to mention that the 2015 CX5 system has had 3-4 years for bugs to be worked out while the Fusion mentioned here had the very first gen version of Sync. One would think the Sync would be buggy years later while the Mazda should be refined, not the opposite.

All that being said, realistically I don't have large gripes about my 2014. I don't really care for voice control aside from the occasional "Call wife" that can just as easily be done via phone. Also, I mostly stream bluetooth or use Pandora, both of which work good enough. Could they be faster to load, connect, and respond to track selection? Sure. But it is a minor annoyance that I am used to by now.

However, if I was looking for strong voice recognition, or relied on a USB drive for music (prior to the 7.0 module), or could not get the 7.0 module due to being out of warranty, then my opinion may be different.
