I just got a 97 626 LX with a 2.0L and a bad auto tranny. I was wondering if I could use the auto transmission from my 2001 Protege LX instead of purchasing a new one?

The transmission from the protege will bolt up to the 626 engine assuming they both had the 2.0 FSDE engine, but after that i'm not sure.

There's another thread on here where someone used the 5-speed from a 626 2.0L in their protege5, so those boxes are interchangeable.

I *believe the autobox in the protege (without sport-shift) was the fn4a-el. Your 626 has an LA4A-EL, so different transmission eh? Not sure how the protege trans would work in the 626... after some limited searching i couldn't find anyone who swapped a protege trans. into a 626, best i could find was some guy had "626 2.0L FN4A-EL" as his signature on a 626 forum... not the most reliable info.

I'd stick with another 626 transmission, or if you're up to it put that protege trans in there and let us know how it goes eh?

Here's some links:

Little bit of info about various automatics that came in 626's over the years http://www.dustbury.com/626/trans.html

Automatics that came in the protege... http://www.protegefaq.net/transmission.html

The protege had a totally different transmission than the 626 did. Find a 626 transmission and add a transmission cooler.
