6MT Endangered?

either way thumbs up for Mazda for bring in the manual!! no other company is willing to do so.

There are a few other SUVs offering a MT. This list is from 2012 models: Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot, Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Juke, Nissan Xterra, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Suzuki SX4, Toyota FJ, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

wow, none of them come across my shopping list. actually wanted Passat or mazda 6 wagon with MT, but that is not going to happen.

Same here! I also considered a Jetta sportwagon, but there was nothing in my area that wasn't stupid expensive or had an MT.

If any truth to that, then more likely the 2.0L is endangered.

I hope they don't drop the 2.0L. I could certainly live with 1-2 mpg less but I wouldn't unless I had no choice in the matter. That's around 3%-8% more fuel cost every month. Since fuel is a major portion of most peoples monthly spending, increased fuel purchases would have a negative effect on their lifestyle. On the other hand, I've not noticed any negative effect on my lifestyle of having less horsepower on tap. I get to where I'm going at exactly the same time as I would with a bigger engine.

Yes agreed and still TBD ( long term future of manual and 2.0 ), but currently model year 2014 offers both.

I would argue that the take rate is so low on the 6MT because a lot of people are wanting to other features that come standard in the Touring and GT. I would suspect if they offered a manual tranny in at least the touring they would see the take rate of that option improve.

It is endangered because of this:

-For some stupid reason, people don't know how or want to drive a vehicle with a manual.

-Mazda is hurting the sales of the manual themselves. It is currently only offered on the baseline Sport trim, and is not available with many of the features that most buyers want, so they are forced to get the auto.

-People think that an SUV with a manual is weird. I drive a '93 VW Eurovan with a manual and don't think it's weird at all.

Well that just blew my plan out of the water. Thanks for the heads up! I was planning on buying a 2.0 MT as soon as my local dealer could get it my color in (first week of March, I think). But now I'm going to hold my fire for awhile and see if this pans out. I've had the good'ole CRV (MT) for about eight years. What's another six months? And besides, it's a great car and running fine :). I know I'm dreaming here, but maybe they are planning to bring the 2.5L/6MT on one of the better "lines." I would gladly pay more for a better package if it were available...
And I hope you realize that the 2.5 is only available in Touring and Grand Touring trims, meaning the manual would be paired with more desirable options, i.e. more people would be interested in the manual.

-People think that an SUV with a manual is weird...

I'm going to modifiy that line to say people in 'Merica think an SUV with a manual is weird... In the rest of the world it's completely normal. I'm not saying people in 'Merica are fat, lazy and stupid - that wouldn't be PC (another strikingly American concept). But the #1 theft deterrent in this country is a manual gear box... I guess maybe rowing your own gears just interferes too much with peoples real priorities of texting and updating their facebook status while they drive :).

I will say that if I had to fight stop and go traffic everyday, I would cosider the AT so I'm not painting everybody with this brush, but it does seem to be the general trend (lazyness) in our culture nowdays...

I fight it somewhat daily and it's taking some getting used to, but overall it ain't bad. If you picked an MT for the usual reasons then an MT in traffic is not going to ruin your day. The worst part I find are on-ramps, but the challenge keeps me from cussing at the stupidity around me (like the metering lights) lolol

Absolutely. They'd sell far more MT if it was made available in the AWD trims. Instead, they lose all that business to either Subaru (Outback & Forester) or Jeep (Patriot)

I would make all AWD manual CX-5s as special orders since they probably wouldn't sell well to the average buyer and dealers don't want to be stuck with them on their lot. Maybe have a 500$ non-refundable deposit and the car could be made to the customers specification.

According to information released by Mazda, the SkyActiv MT was designed from the ground up to be used only with FWD vehicles. From reading those statements, I would be surprised if they even consider releasing an AWD MT. They implied that it would require a redesign of the MT.

You can get an AWD MT CX-5 in Europe and Japan in both gas and diesel configurations. The technology exists already. No redesign needed.

Yes, I just went and saw that on the Mazda UK "Build your CX-5" page. Don't know why Mazda issued the statements that they did. Perhaps just for marketing purposes.

The only excuse I've received from dealers and directly speaking with Mazda is that it's related to emissions standards as to why you can get an MT AWD in Europe, but not here.

I call BS on that.

Total BS... Mazda is just trying to keep costs down by marketing to the "masses." The MT is already "approved" in the US market. The 2.5 is "approved" in the US market. AWD is "approved" in the US market. The MT + 2.5L is "approved" in the US market on the Mazda 6... Honestly, every thing a dealer says is either 1.) Wrong or 2.) a flat out lie to try and get your money (as much as possible) now.

I would be glad to negotiate a price and then put down a non-refundable $500 deposit on the car I actually want and wait a month or two to get it rather then try and talk myself into living with what I don't. I'm giving Mazda time to sort out the market. Like everybody said, there is a market for cars that aren't stripped down basic models w/ the MT. Right now Mazda is after the low hanging fruit. In time they will be going after more speciallized market - they want our money too!
