1999 Protege LX
Who makes the stock 6x9 speakers in the 1999 Protege? What is the wattage power of them?

I havne't seen mine in a while but I recall something like 15watt @ 4 ohm or something rediculously sucky like that. and I think they are pioneer. I'm sure someone will correct me soon

I'd say they are made by sony but I cant remember, I gotta take a look at my stock speakers if I can find them in that black whole, I mean my closet. and yea they are 15watt speakers...I think.

I can get some brand new Sony 3-way 6x9's (150 watt) for $30.00. Should I go for it, or will it really not make that much of a difference?

sure, you can go for that.

i saw a Pioneer on the magnet when i was replacing the rear speakers for the Protege i owned a year ago

I have them in my hands right now they are actually Pioneer 25 watt at 4 ohm, same as the front door 6x8. I wouldnt get the sonys, jsut save and get the Alpine type-s, they are mad nice, just gotta amp em a lil or have a strong head unit.

I remember the back being pioneer but I dont remember seeing anything on the fronts. They were like ford brand or something no ratings on the fronts ether.

FYI, the factory Protege stereo only puts out 10-15 watts RMS. Connecting a 50-100 watt 6x9 speaker to it will actually reduce the sound output of your system.

If you must keep the factory head unit, I recommend purchasing an external amplifier (50-100w per channel RMS) and a set of components to replace the front speakers. Don't worry about amplifying or even using the rear speakers as you don't need them.

You can fit 5x7", 6x8", 5.25", or 6.5" components in the front. The crossovers can be mounted inside the door and the tweeters can be mounted coaxially, or you can cut a small hole in the door to flush mount them. I know it sounds like alot of work but the end result is amazing. You'll never install a set of coaxial speakers in your car again.

The 2002.5/2003 tweeter pods are poorly angled and cannot hold many aftermarket tweeters. If the component set you buy has a swivel flush mount adapter you are better off just modifying your stock panels by cutting a hole in them.
