6 speed tranny?

Which again brings us back to saving money. If you want a six-speed or better gas mileage, trade your car in for a Hybrid or buy a Diesel and run of veggie power (www.greasecar.com). As soon as you start transplanting transmissions and engines you will go way over the budget of saving money.

the guy asks a simple question and clearly states that he dosent knwo anything about this stuff and you treat him like a moron. quit being a ****** asshole. hes just a noob

there was a some yokel here who proclaimed he was going to slap a Focus SVT six-speed on his automatic protege5...you can all guess how far that went

matty p was working on stuffing an SHO trans in his car, as there are numerous similarities between that and ours supposedly. no dice though.

The rotory engines take premium fuel and get significantly worse gas mileage.

Actually, one thing I liked about my beat-ass '87 RX-7 was that it's generally aggreed that the NA rotaries run best on regular unleaded!

RX-8's I think, do require premium.

I don't really think that I was being an asshole. That was not my intension. I'm just direct I guess.

just trying to help.

Sorry if I'm jacking the thread, but on the topic of fuel economy, is it possible to retune the P5 transmission to keep the revs lower, sacrificing accel?

I have only seen a "Final Drive Kit" to make it accel faster. I suppose it's possible but to custom fab it would SUCK BALLS $$$

That might be a better option. You could install a taller 5th gear (if they even make one) but when you come to hills on the highway going 65-75mph the engine will bog and you'll have to downshift. That is assuming you have a 5spd. I wouldn't try this on a 4-spd auto.

Normally when you change the 5th you have to modify or part with the 2nd gear to make the larger gear fit...

It would require much more than a single gear to make it work, or a revamp of the case and all the gears inside. Yeouch. It would be easier to buy a used car with taller gears. IE, $2500.00 1986 944.

Earlier models had the v6 with a yamaha head and the later ones had a v8 with no manual option

Are the old 944's supposed to be reliable or something? lol, I can't imagine anything 20 years old being reliable.

If you sink $10,000 into a Protege it is still...a Protege. If you sink $10,000 into a Porsche it is and always will be a Porsche! They respond much better to mods because they are built for racing not commuting.

OK I may be a little off base here but everybody says that if you wanted a fast, or an econ. car to get this or that. To me it has never been about that, if you like your car, do your thing. It all may cost too much but then again in the world of cars who is to say what is reasonable? If sombody wants to hack their Pro. apart and shove a rotory in it they are not doing it because it will be faster then a Rx-7, their doing it because it's a passion, they love it. If the guy who was doing the first B16 swap said "it's too much work and money, I'll just buy a (insert fav. sports car)", where would they be.
I think thats a point that a lot of people miss these days and too many others get flamed for thowing out ideas, good or bad.
And on that note I would love to have a KZ-LE in my P5 (burnout) ,and hell while we're at it a six speed too! (eyeballs)

That makes sense when you say "I want to make my car fast" because with the right funding, any car can be made fast.

However, if you say "I wanna save money on gas by installing a new transmission" it is pointless. Sure you will save money on gas but you will never recoup the money it cost to do the swap. End of story.

In almost all cases, dropping significant money into your car will never increase gas mileage enough to recoup the costs. The only exception being a Bio-Diesel conversion or something along those lines.

when I decide it's time for a new car,or I manage to blow my forged motor,I will be hacking theshit out of my MSP,I will be droping myself in a 13B,and a turboII tranny, and rear end.

no it won't be faster then a RX-7,and it won't drift aswell,it will even cost considerably more, but,**** that,I do it because I love doing it.

not to mention,I can't think of anycar I would rather have then a RWD rotory MSP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude, I just ripped an engine appart that has over 290,000 Km on it and all it needs is a timing belt and an Oil filter...

Uhm I saw talk about the 6th speed, and changing the 5th gear ratio. But it seems to me there is an easier way to make it more fuel effecient and get more top end. Change out the ring and pinion gear to a lower ratio ie 4.10 to 3.75. I'm not sure on this but I thought I saw a lower ratio ring and pinion gear set on the MazdaSpeed Motosports catalog. And it's alot easier to change the final drive ratio than to re-engineer the whole tranny. Course by the same token acceleration will suffer.
