5w30 or 10W30?

misbehave

I am currently using Mobil 1 10W30 oil for my P5.
From another thread, I see many members use 5W30. Actually which one should I use?

I use what the manual recommends: 5W30 (Mobil1 also). You should not need 10W30.

Will it hurt the engine if I suddenly switch back to 5W30 now?

It's been my 4th oil change since I bought the car. All these 4 times I have out the Mobil 1 10W30 into it.

nah.... it will actually be good for it... 5 weight oil circulates faster durring cold-start-up. this is where the majority of engine wear occurs because all of the oil had drained into the pan.

Don't know what the summer weather is like in Seattle, but if I were you I'd stick with 5W30 year round. Some of us who live in hot summer states could get away with 10W30, but there's really no point since the weight at operating temperature is still the same.

Some interesting info on oil weight/content:

If anything you should keep the weight the same as the manufacturer's recommendation and worry about the BRAND of oil you are using. When you see the specs on oils listed at the bottome of that page, it should give you an idea of what's good. I just wish Amsoil was available here in Lubbock. Good stuff. (thumb)

Some years (02 for one) of proteges recommend 5w20 for some reason. Switched back to 5w30 after the first couple changes adn realized that 03's were 5w30. I should probably watch brands of oils more but usually just go for the cheapest oil change. currently got a 4 pack deal at Tire plus for $45. I know I'm just a cheap a##. Anyway I've heard lots of good stuff with both mobil 1 and Amsoil. If you want to spend the dough, they are definitely worht it. Since I usually get my oil changed every 3-5k, I usually don't worry about it as the oil is getting changed fairly quickly.

10w30 or 5w30 is fine for most continental USA weather condition.

Canada would probably benefit more from 5w30, so damn cold up there lol

$45...damn...you can save almost $30 by changin your oil yourself. Include the oilfilter and my total is about $22.

I use Mobile1 10w30 mainly cuz it says "new vehicle formulated" but I dont think it matters down hear in florida. The manuel says 5w30 has a longer temperature range. But it never get cold enough in Florida to warrent using 5w30 so I stuck with 10w30 (what they sell here). Have anyone noticed that 5w30 on the mobile1 bottle says "older vehicle" formulated? Dont know how the weather is like in seattle but if you want to be safe go with 5w30.

I'm using Mobil 1 5w30, so should I switch? I live NYC, and the only really hot days are in July and August. Should I use 10w30? I've got my 15k mile maintenance this sat.

In the Owners manual it shows the temp ranges for the oils..

5W30 from -30C to 35C
10W30 from -25C to 40C

These are approximates looking off of the page in the manual.

It's on Page 8-13 of the 2003 owners manual.

5W30 is a good all round general purpose oil, flows easily, don't forget oil also cools the engine..

I use Castrol Syntech 5W30

That is $45 for 4 oil changes, which is about as cheap, or cheaper, as getting oil and a filter would most likely cost (cheaper oil anyway not syn).

Wow...that is super cheap. So cheap that I would be skeptical. Where did you get this deal...at jiffy lube? Is it a full sythetic? Im always parinoid about letting people change my oil cuz I have no clue if they are going to scam me.

The temperature difference between 5 and 10 is negligible. both work fine, even in cold weather. 5 protects a few degrees colder than 10, check the back of the bottles for the difference. Both are fine for year-round use, as long as you are going synthetic. For "dino juice" old-school oils, the narrower the coverage band the better.

I went from 10 to 5 for the winter here. Made cold startups much quieter. Car seemed a little peppier also.

oil

5W30 for the winter and 10W30 summer

I feel that a good quality dino oil like Pennzoil,Chevron or Castrol GTX is just fine if you change your oil on a regular basis with a quality oil filter like Wix every 3 to 4 months or 5000miles (3000k).
If you like to run your oil for 6 months or more - then go synthetic.
