5th Gear Grind on High Speed of 80mph above

There have been a couple of these "I get grinding when I try to shift into 5th at 80mph while the engine is at idle", and really, I don't completely understand the rationale. It's a lot like complaining of wheelhop when you do a 6000 rpm clutch drop, and expecting the dealer to fix stuff willy-nilly. Sure it'd be nice if I could roast the tires and get a nice smooth burnout, but in both cases here we're talking about asking the car to behave nicely when exposed to a condition that can rightly be called abuse.

If you insist on shifting back and forth between neutral and 5th at 80mph, then at least employ a double-clutching method to save the synchros. By that, I mean the following procedure:

1) Press the clutch in
2) Shift from 5th to neutral
3) Let the clutch out
4) Do whatever you wanted to do in neutral
5) With the clutch still engaged, and the transmission still in neutral, bring the engine speed up to the expected engagement speed (4000rpms or so)
6) Press the clutch in, then quickly shift back into 5th
7) Let the clutch out and resume driving.

Steps 4 and 5 are the critical ones, as they ensure that all internal components of the transmission are moving at roughly the same speed before you try and engage 5th gear.
