i didn't know how to drive stick well at all when i got it. as a matter of fact my mom drove it back home. pwned by my mother. how sad. so don't worry, you'll never feel as big of an idiot as i did.
If this is just a daily driver that you don't plan on doing performance mods to, go with the auto. If you plan on having some fun with the car and doing some performance tricks to it, go with a stick.
For me, even daily driving around is more fun with a manual. There is one incident etched into my brain that will cause me to always be a manual guy. I was test driving a Nissan Maxima auto (they didn't have a manual available) in SoCal in the late eighties. I exited the freeway on a downhill ramp and turned right onto the road back to the dealer. It wasn't a really sharp turn and I took it with some speed. After the apex I hit the power, and........nothing. There was this almost interminable pause while the transmission hunted for the proper gear. Once it finally decided, it jerked and recovered, and I was on my way. It was horrible, and scarred me for life. Had I been driving a manual, I would have already had the proper gear selected before I started the turn, and I would have clipped the apex and been away smooth as apple cider!
I know autos have come a long way in the last 20 or so years, but they still aren't there yet. I think you will be very happy with your decision.
