3rd Gen RX-7 Wheels on the Pro5

Zoom Zoom Boom X 3
I just picked up a set of 3rd Gen RX-7 16X8 rims and hopefully I'll be putting them on the Pro5 in the next week or so. I'll keep eveyone up to date on the details since the rims need to be slightly modified and I'll have to do a little grinding on my front struts as well.

I'm going to use them as my everyday wheels. I want to try the 225/45-16 Hankook Z212 on them. I've been wanting to run 225 series tires on the street for a while now.

Hot... I'll be very interested in how this turns out, I need some new street wheels. Could you just run spacers in the front?

Spacers in the front will work just fine since we have so much more room under the fender there. Once I get the centerbore correct I'll have a better idea of how much I'll have to space the wheel out. It's probably going to need a little more than a quarter inch to clear suffeciently and a spacer that wide doesn't leave much room for the lugnuts without going hubcentric which is big money. The car can stand to have the front track a little wider though.

damn you suck thats ok i like the wheels that i got from you anyways so those will look awesome cant wait to see them... and on that note when are we going to go to tuggles as long as its after april 13 then we can fgo during the week

Let the games begin. I'm getting ready to start tet fitting the rims to figure out how much spacer I'm going to need. Here is a picture of te new Hankooks mounted and the rims painted. Sorry it's a little dark. I'll get better pics later today.

Grinding to your front struts?!
I'm guessing to get more clearence. Care to explain Where exactly you will be grinding the struts? and How you will be grinding it? What struts do you currently have also?

Sorry for the questions, I'm just curious to know what you will be doing because I was in the same situation before (wanting more inner clearence after already using a spacer)

Alright guys I just got back from my grandfather's house where I've been slaving away with a few of his tools. pictures in about 30 mins. I don't think I'll have to grind the front struts, but I'll know more in a few minutes. I just walked in the door and I'm getting ready to mount all of the wheels.

Ok...It doesn't look like I'll have to grind on the front struts. Your jaw is going to drop when you see these clearences I'm working with. I had to machine four 1/8" spacers for all 4 wheels. Thats just a hair over 3mm. All I had to work with was a drill press, band saw, and a small lathe to make them so it took me a few hours, but they didn't cost a penny. I already had the metal from a previous project.

First picture is a better photo to show the color I used. Second picture is the spacer. I know the middle hole isn't perfect, but I didn't have a hole saw big enough so the final few cuts were ground by hand. The third picture shows the rear tire-strut gap. Before the spacers the tire was rubbing the edge of the Mazdaspeed sticker. The fourth picture shows the front rim-strut gap. These were rubbing before the spacer and it also shows where I would have ground the strut.

Pics of the finished product

These are a little heavier than I wanted, but it's a bunch of tire. For my goof off street set up I couldn't be more happy with the way it turned out. Now I'm going to go enjoy them.

yum 225s. Good to know that 16x8s can fit with minimal modification.

Yep...they'll work. You just can't slam the suspension way down and you'll have to run a 2.5" spring/coilover setup so the tire will clear the strut. Notice that mine have the original pringperches completely removed. That is the only way it would work. Then you just have to get a short enough spring so the adjuster will end up above the tire.

I did notice the spring perch being cut off., I'm out of luck because I'm on tokico HPs with goldline springs. Looks good though, how much did the Mazdaspeed struts set you back?

I got them used for $250. I couldn't pass that up.
