3rd gear gone!

So If I don't notice the grinding noise, I'm good?

Is there anything you can do to prevent this from happening? Shift differently?

I wouldnt worry about it if you dont hear/feel anything. For preventitive measures....I dont know.

shift slow. it avoided grinding when i shifted slow. if i quick shifted it would grind. now, even though i got it fixed, i still shift slow unless i need to quick shift

One thing strange, has anyone else seen this? My 02 ( .0) is at 105Kmi. and is getting the 3rd gear grind as well. One thing I have noticed about it is when the transmission is cold, like when I come out to go to work in the mornings, it shifts just fine untill the car gets good and warm, then it starts.

probably becuz the fluid is at its thickest viscosity (usually colder at night). when it heats up, it becomes more fluid. sorta like when a person has rod knock and decide to put thicker weight oil in the motor so it can last a tab bit longer r to hide the noise.

Lucas FTW?

it didnt help when i had the grind. i had his same symptoms. he just has to shift slow for the time being. he can try it if he wants though

What year is your car pr5owner?

And what year is yours frank354?

After 2002.5 they added a stronger fork shift.

I've got the 2002.0 and I don't want my tranny to break (pissed) @ 99k mi now

What miles were you guys at when you noticed these problems?

mine was a first gen 2002 (like one of the first ones to come to Calgary)
when my tranny broke it had about 147XXX KMS

drgnzadiel101 what extended warranty do you have and is it good?

I have Zurich extended warranty. They were a little on the slow side but they covered everything except clutch (of course). i think i pay like 10 bucks a month added to my monthly car payment. I remember at first i thought to myself that i should waste money on extended warranty on a newer car. but then i remembered my tragic honda experience so i put it on and thank goodness i did! it was well worth it

...dont know if this is a thread jack but... i was driving and 3rd gear grinded... i wasnt pushing it that hard... what are we to do to prevent ourselves from losing the 3rd gear?

yea our 3rd gears are like glass. i think all newer mazdas have that problem lol. when they replace it they put a stronger one in there. i think it was a factory oopsie that they did not want to put under recall if im not mistaken. i forgot what parts were needed to fix it if you plan on doing it yourself. there is a thread around here somewhere that talks about t

s***! good thing i seen this thread i was going get pissed at my wife for driving stupid=) hmm wonder if the MSP's got the same problem?

is this issue mostly in the 2002 p5 only or does it extend into the 2003. I may be making a deal on one today and this threat is making me nervous! (nervous)
