yep last month it happened to me, 3rd gear shifter fork breaks, so you are stuck in either 3rd gear or 4th gear even though the shifter position is 3rd.

cost of rebuild is about $1350 Canadian.

these G-Series trannys are the worst s*** known to man kind next to chrysler trannys

the grinding is not so much of a problem but its the weak linkage parts. even the safety gate between 5th and reverse was broken on mine, dont know how since i never try and go from 5th to rev.

when mine was taken apart the guy was pretty confused, my 3rd gear and 2nd gear looks like it had the living crap beaten out of it but my clutch looked brand new even though all parts were original. maybe my tranny was used from another vehicle and put into a new car. who knows.

My P5 has the same issue while going from 2nd - 3rd and I can't downshift from 4th to 3rd it won't allow me the piece of crap just grinds. Man I hope my tranny last. How much did it cost to fix?

How many miles do you have? 3rd gear grinds on occasion in my car. I can't afford a new tranny!

What year is your car pr5owner?

And what year is yours frank354?

After 2002.5 they added a stronger fork shift.

I've got the 2002.0 and I don't want my tranny to break (pissed) @ 99k mi now

What miles were you guys at when you noticed these problems?

I have trouble going into reverse on my car. Like sometimes when I try to put it into reverse (and not from the 5th gear position), it goes in, but not all the way. Is this a sign of the tranny dying? (boom03)

That's fine, pretty normal for many cars. My understanding is reverse gears are pretty crude, squared off things and don't mesh quite as nicely as the forward gears.

If it won't go in, put it in neutral, depress and release the clutch, and try again.

Thank god. Thats usually what I have to do. I'd still like to know around when the tranny starts to go bad. The main reason I bought a manual car was because I was told that automatic's trannys go bad @ around 120k-150k miles. Where as manuals are much more reliable. This true?
Is replacing the forks on your tranny do-it-yourselfable for a newb?

...sadly i must sub to this thread... going from 2nd to 3rd sometimes grinds...usually if im shifting hard.

Someone told me that redline fluid can sometimes cause a little grind. Any truth to that?

i have a 2002 and it has about 140k miles on it and this is the first major problem with the car, i was just about to sell it too
and i noticed it about 8 or 10k miles back, it would only happen at first if id shift relatively fast, but over time it just got worse and it led to what i got now.

Mine was completely effed. My 3rd gear grinded. And after a while it gave. It wouldn't go into 1st 2nd or 5th. It went into 3rd and 4th, but didn't engage. It was as if 3rd and 4th were just extra spots that did nothing. And apparently neutral was a gear, I stalled in neutral. And actually had to drive home in neutral. Then I put it in reverse, and couldn't get it out. I just bought an 03 trans and a new clutch pressure plate, etc. It runs amazingly now. Only cost me a little under 2 grand :|

I get the same issue... except when i am trying to shift fast not really hard just quickly.

So what was your issue bad presure plate, clutch or both?

What is 'grinding' ?
How do you know if you have this problem? (or are at the beginning stages of it)

A noise? a feel when you shift?

Ok, Have you ever mishifted into any gear and hear that grinding sound. Like from 1st going to 2nd and dont fully get through the syncho and hear a grinding/crunching sound. Worst sound ever.

So, the grinding the people are describing going into 3rd developed into normal driving conditions, even with the clutch fully depressed and putting smoothly into gear. It still just will grind. And over time you will either get stuck in gear, 1st 3rd and 5th wont engage, or just not be able to put it in 3rd. As if something was blocking it.

So If I don't notice the grinding noise, I'm good?

Is there anything you can do to prevent this from happening? Shift differently?
