Yesterday I hit a new high in fuel efficiency with my Mazda3: 38.7 MPG. I've hit 38.x MPG twice in the last two weeks. That was almost purely expressway driving on my commute between Lansing and Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Good for you! I recently hit the 34mpg+ mark for the first time. Also in my case was mostly highway, which is not my usual driving pattern. Typically I drive 50/50 between highway and backroads with not many intersections.

At those conditions I average around 32mpg. Mine is a stock 3s Touring 5-door.

last 2 tanks for me were 34.8 and 29.9... lol i got a little right foot happy and stuck in way too much traffic on the last tank... this tank is looking to be back at 34.x

best i ever got on only highway was 37.x nicely done chibana

this is crazy. i average about 23mpg if im lucky. i usually get 17mpg on the highway.

Damn, I hit 35.7 today on the average MPG but 38.x is hella better.

it was low 33.x on my last tank... zoomvt wtf are you doing that you are getting 23mpg... i know v8 pickups that get that. its ok to shift out of 3rd gear once in a while you know....

wow, you guys are lucky! Im getting around 18-19 mpg... I do about 95% city driving and 5% highway.

but then again i drive it like i stole most of the time (drive)

lol. i actually get only 17 on the highway. i get like 23 in the "city"

and yes i drive it like i stole it...

Wow, what the hell. I have an automatic, and all of my driving is basically in the city, but I average out around 22 miles per gallon (about 240-250 miles per tank). For my trip to to D.C., I got like 34-37 MPG which was awesome, 400 miles to a tank is nothing to scoff at.

What do you guys do to maintain fuel efficiency?

lol its townships not territory... duh...

as far as keeping up fuel efficiency changed my plugs at 40k, check and clean intake filter at oil changes/ change oil every 5-7k (redline) check tire psi every other fill up (about every 20days or so)

also i have lowering springs and light weight wheels which i would think also add to the mpg improvement. if you go to eibachs site they have a comparo of an accord before and after the prokit and mpg improved like 3mpg or something. i also have a full exhaust system not sure if that helps the mpg or not but none of my co-workers believe i average over 30mpg.

last tank of some spirited driving (took a 100mile back road drive for the hell of it) and got 31mpg

A 100 mile back road drive?!?!?!?!?!? Damn, I wish I had back roads like that in California.

I have a 07 3 iTouring and I filled up today and avg'd it out to about 30 mpg and that is hard driving in traffic in Destin, Florida. No highway what so ever and I have a lead foot and I shift into auto-stick when I'm at red lights to get away from all the tourists... I used to get around 20 when I would have my windows and sunroof open. I can go from 80mph to 25mph in about a minute down here when I was driving down from Ohio (and back up) and to and from Orlando I was pretty much going 110 the whole time and still got 32mpg out of my little engine that could.

Man, these are huge discrepencies from what I'm getting. It dosen't look like it's a large amount of mods that are making the difference. I drive mine like I stole it most of the time, but even still, that shouldn't count for a 8mpg loss would it? The car is two months old (haven't even had the first oil change), so I doubt there's something wrong or off-kilter that's messing it up.

I do the same thing as skylar, I use the sport-shift at red lights to come off the line faster and get away from all the traffic, and I use it for down-shifting when passing people, and pretty muce use it all the time actually. Does running at a lower gear but slightly higher rpms hurt gas mileage that much. Say, running in 4th at around 3k rpms instead of in 5th at 2-2.5k?

Well I know yours is the hatch and mine is the sedan I don't know how these people can drive a 3 to get 40 mpg thats insane how can you not drive it like a Zoom-Zoom should???? Maybe it's because I'm so young??
