Ford Probe and 626 GT Hatch
So Ive got my '88 626 GT Hatch. Its full of rust and holes. And Im awaiting purchasing a '91 323. And Im going to attempt the swap to F2T. Its got the H series trans so I was told It wouldn't fit with out custom modding. But the G series will fit? And anyone who has done this reply asap. I need al the help I can get for this. It is going to be my track car/project.

Also hello from ProbeTalk. Im been over there this whole time thinking no mazda forums existed. (Im in teh dark)

Welcome and good luck with the swap hope it works out. I have a 91 626 GT Turbo Hatch as well and just love the body style.

This sounds like a fun project! All the torque the F2's make will make that thing fly! lol

Oh btw..hi from PT also :D

I would run the H transmission with the bigger clutch and internals. You could chase up a g series from an F2 if you really wanted.

so it IS the F2 that has the g series is it? I wasnt sure whether or not it was from the f2 or the b2200 trans. This make it so much better. Do the internals swap directly into the G from the H?
And the only problem with the H trans that Ive run into is that someone that has used it, had to custom fit it and there is millimeters or clearance. and modified parts just isnt my strong point. especially with money at the moment.

The internals do not interchange between the two transmissions.

The H uses a 1 inch input shaft and essentially a 230mm turbo Rx7 clutch. The G series uses a 15/16 input shaft and a 225mm clutch.

The amount of torque the F2T engine made is why they received the H transmissions.

ah, i see. so unless i have a bunch of spare tannies. im better off with custom :( blah.

OK. I guess Ill go that route and keep the f2t's tranny.

also when getting regrinds for cams. how much of a benefit is it for the f2t? Ive heard both good and bad. (bad being only slight different. unnoticeable even.)

^^^sorry if its the wrong section for that question.

I have only seen one place do some custom camshaft work for the F2T. I believe it was Garrett Machine in Lebanon Oregon.

The benefits of a camshaft would depend on the grind

hit up bpt323 on clubprotege.com. he owns the site, and installed a fe3 in his 323. which uses the exact same mounts as a f2t. he had to use a G series 2.2 na trans. but you can build them up to be stronger then a h series. so isnt that big of a deal.

The only engine the H came bolted to was the F2T. The bellhouse pattern is quite different for the K series.

the H series was also used on the probes with the 3.0 v6 vulcan. its not just f2t's with them.

I was referring to the 2.2 na G-Series trans that Patrick mentioned.

well the bell housing is quite different. but that doesnt mean you cant swap the bell housings. ive never heard of anyone attempting it. one real big negative about even thinking about that, is that the H series tran's is getting pretty hard to find, and rare. where as the kl G serie's are dome a dozen in most place's.

wait a sec. the g series came on the GL probes right? But it fits a KL? Is this what your saying? Wow. Im lost. Ill try that site out and hopefully find out how to make the g series stronger. Im not into customizing mechanical parts.

There are several variants of the G series transmission. There are several configurations of bell house pattern depending on which engine it was mated to.

There are also two different length main shafts and counter shafts for the g series transmissions.

Yes. G is a family of trans. Not a spicific one. Hell the ford zx2, escort gt evevn use a g series. Kinda like the mazda K series motor. Theres alot of different versions. But there all part of the K series family of motors.

yup. exactly. thats why the 3.0 v6 probes have an H series like the turbo 2.2's. but it wont bolt up. they both have different bell housings. gearing is also slightly different between them. alot of the 2.2 turbo guys have been swapping in the 3.0 5th gear cause its a little longer then the 2.2's.
