3" exhaust, downpipe, and other mods for the MSP?

Hey guys, I'm new to the board. A coworker owns an MSP, and we want it to hit 12's when Gateway International Raceway opens. I looked everywhere for a 3" downpipe and exhaust kit for these cars, but I couldn't find one. Who makes them if anyone does? We want stainless headers as well -who makes the best ones? Does anyone make a larger intercooler for these cars or a liquid intercooler? Has anyone experimented with a stretch intercooler design where a portion of a second intercooler is welded on to the original? Thanks!

pm Mental Addiction for new manifold and FMIC. BTW, you will have a lot of work to do to hit 12s with a MSP.

you will need engine management, new clutch, much increased boost (read: forged internals, which you can get from Mental Addiction as well), new FMIC, full exhaust, prolly upgraded injectors, intake etc. and a good driver, and it would help with slicks.

i hope you get to your goal, but maybe out of all the owners here i believe only one or two have even hit 12s.

iON and GHL exhausts only ones that are 3" from the turbo back. My iON Exhaust is in transit as we speak.

yea i added that in my other thread as you were typing this response. didnt see he wants to shoot for 20+ psi

yeah, i'd go with ghl for the exhaust.
then contact mam or mpnick for any other info you might need as they are pretty damn knowledgeable

yep and dont make anymore threads, you got three already i think. its going to get to people typing the same s*** three times.

please try to stick with one thread in the future so we can be more helpful.

Can you give me links to where I can get either of those systems for a good price? My Buicks run 10's, and have had some pretty crafty mods. I've got an alcohol injection kit I can throw on this. What kind of compression levels is the stock motor good for, ie how much boost can I run before she blows? This is assuming increase injector size, fuel pump, etc. A turbo Regal's 3.8 is good for 30+psi before ever lifting the valve covers. Just wondering how high these cars can go. Is there anyone out there that can burn chips for these cars? I've got some 42.5lb injectors laying around, and a Walbro 340 fuel pump, but I've never worked on imports before, and I'm not sure if 42.5lb injectors are compatible???

you'll find most of the info you need in the forced induction section of the forum.

this car is good for only 250whp MAYBE pushing it before she blows, and MANY have blown at MUCH less. the rods are the weakest point.

dont expect to do s*** or come close to 12s without forged internals, as far as i see it.

get the wrx440 injectors, i doubt those ones you have will work. the 340 pump is too much and wont fit i dont think.

oh and PM "Mental Addiction" and he can help you out with a new turbo, manifold, FMIC, forged internals, etc etc.

you can contact focus. he is so far is the only one in the 12's. but that is about to change in a couple months. there should be around 5 or 6, maybe more, in the 12's this year.

Well, thanks for the info guys. That definitely sucks that the motor is the weakest link. Any idea how much power the transmission is good for? I've got spare Grand National turbos, and an alcohol kit. The fuel pump can be found for < $100. I can probably find a barely used set of injectors for a very reasonable price. Are these forged internals custom made for these cars, or are they compatable with other vehicles? I'm just wondering where the $5K estimate is coming from? Are you figuring labor? Has anyone on the boards used a liquid intercooler, and if so, what model? I have a custom made one that might fit throwing a fuel cell in the trunk.

i think one member is using a liquid-air intercooler but it is custome. all intercoolers are air-air. the pricetag is soo high because of the amount of work done and done so the car can run safely at...say...15psi daily without a problem. it would be less if you look at what is needed and do most of the stuff yourself or know people that can get things done cheaper, but right.

the internals i mentioned are custom for this car.

i added up the costs that i posted in the other thread, and without labor, at a minimum, you are looking at 5500 dollars in expenses. that is with a 100 dollar exhaust and the cheapest engine management.

oh, and dont forget since we dont have "chips" youll need a laptop to go with the engine management. and if you go with the cheapest engine management (the MPI) it is highly recommended NOT to use USB, but to use serial (a problem for most new laptops since serial ports are so outdated)

Holy christ. My buddy is going to be pissed. So, assuming we just do downpipe w/dump, injectors, fuel pump, chip, and alcohol kit, what boost would be safe to run on stock motor & tranny? What times would you estimate?

remember there is no chip, only engine management. it will have to be tuned, its not just plug and play.

if youre just going with what you listed and not forging the motor, then you wont need the injectors.

youre looking at a max boost of my guess, 12-13psi and thats pushing it. someone here ran like 16psi or somethign daily for a while, but his engine eventually blew.

some engines seem to have more tolerance than others, but the minute your buddy boosts in 4th gear, etc zoom zoom boom, as we say here.

also, without an aftermarket clutch you could be hurting also. but with what you listed and bearing in mind what i said, at 12-13psi with like 94 octane and engine management...i would say high 13s with a good driver. MAYBE. probably closer to 14s since youre talking about a FWD car with wheel hop.

which reminds me, youre gonna want upgraded engine mounts.

well he should have realized this isn't a drag car. Sick in the twisties, yes, straight line fast, no. you will have to spend som money but this car can be made to reach the low 12's. You will just need $$ to get there, around what matthew said for high 12's, a little more for lower 12's. This is of course having the car RELIABLE to not blow up while driving down the street. stock engine good for a safe 10-12 psi but dont push it. I wouldn't go above 10psi on stock internals for too long.
