For all my fellow P5 drivers,what do guys thing about the car that replaced our car??Personally I think it's cool and ****** up at the same time.Cool b/c the 3 looks awesome(DVD navi,stereo controls on steering wheel,stock 17's and oh yeah 160hp)but I don't like the big huge D-pillar-2much blind spot. ****** up b/c our P5 only lived for about 2 years.

Although I personally like the p5 more on the exterior, I think the 3 has a much nicer interior, and the upgraded engine is something the p5 really needed stock. In my opinion it was smart for mazda to stop selling the p5 after 2 years, since mazda didn't sell that many p5's...I haven't seen a lot of p5s up until the when mazda started giving rebates on them.Keep in mind Mazda is set on making money, not doing what a small majority of people desire....if they can both make money and please the majority of the people then that's fantastic...but hard to acheive. And besides, no need to complain about the replacement if you have a p5....your car is relatively rare and was only made for 2 years!

I love the interior of the 3, the exterior is kinda neat but I still like the P5 exterior more.

I like the new 3 hatch, but I still like the 'chunkier' look of my Protege5, as it has a more robust style, reminiscent of rally cars of various makes and models. The 3, however, definitly follows the tradition nicely, looking quite a deal like a Vauxhaul, Renault, or Peugeot in its lines, all of which are contenders in the rallye circuit, and all have a similar charm of thier own. =)

The p5 was not anything near a best seller until the rebate came out....and Mazda isn't exactly bringing in much money with the rebates going on....The reason for the rebate is to GET RID of the remaining p5s since they just can't sell all the remaining ones in a decent amount of time to make room for the new 3's....

I have yet to test drive a 3, but from reviews the general consensus seems to be its less frisky, and fun. Some mentioned the steering response being a bit slower too.
I think it has become like the Golf GTI, more luxurious but lacks the hot hatch feeling of Japanese cars in the 90's.

When the Pro5 was introduced to the US in '01 I remember reading that Mazda anticpated selling 12,000 units annually in the US. They actually sold 68,826 in '02 and 56,021 in '03 according the AIC Automotive Research. Making it the second best seller in the line up behind the Protege sedan.

I went to the local dealership and asked a sales person how are the 3's selling he said not too good, the guy told me that the other day a couple came in with their eyes set on a mazda 3 and ended leaving the lot with a Protege5

It's still early for the 3 to sell well. Mazda has only recently started marketing the car, but they've been doing it heavily during the NFL playoffs. Most people aren't interested in cars and only know about something after they've seen an ad. We'll have a better idea of how the 3 is doing six months from now. And as long as there are deeply discounted P5s on the lot it will be tough to move the 3 hatch. It's not worth the extra ~$5k.
I personally think the 3 sedan is far and away a better looking car than the Protege. The hatch is drastically different than the P5 but I'm not sure it's better looking, at least on the outside.
I test drove the Mazda 3, and eech from the first moment..
I drove the top of the line hatch, it was auto though, but the car had a terrible feel, very disconnected, unrealistic.
The out side of the sedan is by far nicer than the hatch, but still not attractive. I do not like the interior, you can't customize the deck.
The Speedometer with those things around it really bothered me, and the orientation of them too. The seats weren't as comfortable, and the adjustment on them bottom, instead of 2 knobs only allows you to raise or lower it.
The power didn't seem as responsive, could be part of the not as fun to drive.

The hinges for the hatch make bumps on the roof, like they are exposed, and the handle is right at the bottom, above the bumper, pain in the ass..
I could go on..
I can say in general, I don't like the car..
