What is the difference between the z and zx?

Does anyone know if they are good cars? I have an opportunity to get one for free and want to know if it is worth putting money into it and using it for a race car? Finally, are parts expensive and/or hard to find for them.

Thanks

not bad, the earlier 240 are much lighter & more fun.. the 280 a getting bigger and moving to the GT type...

And check for rust... they're really good at that!

And generally the term ZX was use to denote a higher more upclase version (this can be power or comfort).

The Z31 was just a Z yet it had turbo, but the Z32 was a ZX as it was a more refined and believed higher verison of the 300 series.

280zx could be had turbo or N/A, the second generation 280s just brought more luxury over the first Gen 280s.

Z31 were 300ZX from 1984 - 1989 could be N/A (VG30e) or turbo (VG30ET)
Z32 were 300Zx from 1990 - 1994 coud be N/A (VG30DE) or twin turbo'ed (VG30DETT)

Z31 introduced the first V6 to the Z line of cars, and the Second Gen 280s started introduction luxury to the Z line of cars.

and the only reason why a 240z would be lighter was it had a smaller motor

Wrong, big time wrong !!

280Z was totally different Chassis and suspension than a 280zx...280Z is MUCH lighter than a 280ZX..Much more nimble and tossable...

280Z is faster and has better handling than a ZX(unless turbo)

Both are known to be rustbuckets though. Nissan did little as far as rust protection back then. If condition is equal get the 280Z

As far as race cars, 280Z's rule as race cars with the suspension renewed(new struts, springs and bushings)..Also I HIGHLY recommend a strut tower bar front and rear..the Z benefits greatly from it

wow arn't we high on ourselves. calm down, if I'm wrong just let me know.

when I was sayting the 240z was not that light I was talking about the first gen z cars (240Z to 280Z) not the 280ZX which your right is a different chassis.
and actually we both were wrong. from what I can tell the 240z was the lightest, then the 260z, then the 280ZX, then the 280Z.

I never made an incorrect statement

You contradicted yourslef in the same post

the 280Z was not heavier than a 280ZX..the only real reason a 280Z weighed more than a 240Z was the big crash bumpers they had to have...The engines were pretty much the same weight...the extra .4 liters came from stroke so the extra weight was negligible....the L28 was a better engine though because it was fuel injected, however put out less HP due to SMOG regulations...

The ultimate would be a 280Z with an L28 turbo swap !!

Yes I know you can do V8 swaps, but it throws off weight distribution considerably for a good track car.

contradicted myself? i said the 240z was not that much lighter. and by searching I found the 240z was almost 300lbs lighter then the 280z, so i admited that it was the lightest, then the 260z and then yes the 280ZX, then the 280Z. from what I read the 280z was 50ilbs heavier then the 280zx. so why would the 280z be better 240z if it was heavier. wouldnt you want to go with the 240z and do the a turboed l28 in it since the 1st gen Z had the same suspension basically.

His choices are a 280Z or a 280ZX. He never mentioned a 240Z. and whatever you read is wrong. The 280ZX outweighs a 280Z

1978 280Z 5 speed curb weight 2780

1979 280ZX 5 speed curb weight 2825

I understand his choices are 280Z or 280zx. if it was up to me I would take a 280z. and he never mentioned the 240z, rx7gslse did. so where are you getting your info, how is mine wrong and yours right. get off the high horse. the sites I searched and found said the 280Z weighs in at 2875 and the 280zx weights in at 2825.

The weight you have is for a 280Z auto, not a 5 speed. I'm not on a high horse. I just happen to know for a fact my information is right. 2 reasons:

#1. I personally owned a 1978 280Z and a 1979 280ZX and I can read the vehicle curb weight sticker.

#2 I have access to PDF's of actual vehicle specifications released by Nissan.

If you really want to get specific in differences, the 280Z didnt have power steering and the 280zx did. Also they started offering more luxury items on more cars in the ZX's, like power windows, and A/C was more often than not included on the cars, this was not always the case with the 280Z. Also this is not included in the released curb weight figures.

It IS OK to just say you are wrong even if you are a mod. I on occasion have to do that on protegeclub,

I agree with you on differences of the cars. that was never an issue, we have never disagreed on that. and I have no problem admitting when Im wrong when I am proved wrong. and after three posts of you saying your right, your finally post some proof. THANK YOU. All you had to say in your first post was that you owned cars and you know the weight. by jumping up and down saying your wrong, your wrong just showed you are high on a horse. and by just keep saying I'm wrong with no proof, when I have said that I have seen it on other sites you proved you are on a high horse. in your last post you let me know what the weights were for and that i was mistaken and the way your message is, yes you are on a high horse.

so next time yes get off your high horse and act like a human being. If you can prove somebody wrong, just post the proof in your first post, not after making three different post with childish arguements. thank you have a nice day.

just to make you feel better I, FREEKWONDER, MODERATOR FOR THE PROTEGE BOARD AM WRONG.

I'm a Z fan from WAY back, just get worked up when someone tells me I'M wrong about specs on a car I owned, lol

i just get worked up when someone tells me i'm wrong in a childish way and not provide proof when they have had the proof from the begining. (headbang) but on a side note

DATSUNS RULE! can't wait until my 510 is running with all 500 horse.
