225/40 or 225/45? Difference?

The only 225/40 tire within spec for a 7'inch wheel such as the stock MS3 is the Yokohama Parada Spec2s'. All the other require 7.5' inch or greater to be within spec but they'll still fit on a 7'inch wheel. I just bought a set of Nitto INVO 225/45's so hopefully I don't have any issues..I might just have to roll the fenders oh well.

Actual tire size varies quite a bit by brand and by type. I have 225/45-18 Dunlop Star Spec's and nothing rubs at all. I'm on stock springs and Koni shocks, but I've bottomed out both ends of the car and nothing happened.

They also brought my speedometer into proper calibration, fwiw.

MS3 with 225/45/18 and stock suspencion

I have an 08 MS3 currently running 225/45/18 Dunlop Direzza Z1 Sport Star Spec on my stock rims and stock suspension. I have had this setup now for 7 months with zero issues. This car see's lots of hard driving as well as a GMR run every Sunday morning. I can say with absolute confidence that this setup is not a problem.

I'm sporting some 225/45 on RX8 rims and have had no rubbing issues. I've had a couple people in the back, and brought some home improvement stuff from Lowes and it didnt rub. BUT, there sure wasn't a lot of room left in there....

I also have 225/45s on RX-8s. The rear tires contact the fenders on driveway transitions.

I have 225/45x18 RE01-R's and have never had them rub, including during autocross and track. I think it actually depends somewhat on the brand/style of tire (not all are created equal). I also know that some 225/40's are not spec'd to go on the stock 7" rim, so that's worth checking before investing.

Interesting... I have the same tires and mine will occasionally rub when the car is loaded with people and turning hard (curving freeway on-ramps at high speed). Are you running stock rims? Slight differences between cars may be enough...

Just ordered 225/40/18 Hankook Ventus V12 Evo, ok to run? Is it a safety hazard to run these? Tirerack specs state 7.5-9 inch rim.

edit: called america's tire co and asked if ok to run 225/40/18 on my stock 7" rim and they said not an issue even if specs say for 7.5-9" rim.

225/45/18 on stock suspension, no rubbing issues. Running RE50 Pole Positions (difference in the nylon caps over OE and longer treadwear) and notice a slight difference when pushing them hard, but not enough to complain.

Running Hankook EVO V12 225/40/18 on 7 inch rim but manufacture suggests 7.5-9 inch rim. Tirerack and Americas Tire say ok to run. Got it installed today and no issues.

Don't know who you talked to at Tirerack but the tech specs on this tire (as with all 225/40) series on a 7" rim would NOT be recommended by any manufacturer or installer...I asked this same question to Tirerack when switching sizes and was told NO it's not recommended to run a 225/40 on my stock MS3 7" wide wheel.

I used your exact tire and size and as you see the rim size starts at 7.5"-9" width. Anyway, good for you if it works out OK just saying you're pushing it putting a 225/40 on a 7" wheel. Tire bead is one of the issues installing the incorrect tire size on a rim that's not matched properly. Don't want to get into a long explanation but there's a lot of good info out there on the subject. As far as running a 225/45 with lowering springs or coilovers, you will most likely rub. I'm running a 225/45 with stock suspension and it's OK but there's very little wheel gap and for sure if I was lower I would see some rubbing issues...
